JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The York College women's track & field team opened up their 2011 outdoor campaign, competing at the University of North Florida Spring Break Invitational. The Spartans gained valuable experience going up against such programs as Florida State, West Virginia, Pepperdine, South Florida, and Winthrop.
Freshman sensation Laura Rowlands, who already put together an outstanding indoor session, faired exceptionally well in her first collegiate outdoor meet. The rookie's best finish came in the triple jump where she finished seventh with a total distance of 11.35 meters. Rowlands also had strong performances in the high jump, where she posted a 12th-place 4.73-meter height, while she also registered a 4.73-meter leap in the long jump, taking 21st out of 33 finishers.
On the track, senior Ally Montello took 26th in the 800-meter run with a 2:28.15 while she also took 34th in the 400 with a 1:03.32.
Spartan newcomer Megan Phillips performed well over a trio of events. Her best finish came in the 800 meters where she placed 28th out of 48 finishers with a 2:28.42. Phillips took 29th in the 1500 meters with a 5:07.81 while finishing the 400 in 1:04.30.
Rachel Berninger, a fellow Spartan rookie, competed in both the 800 and 1500, finishing with times of 2:30.08 and 5:22.31, respectively.
In the 100 hurdles, Chitom Henry posted a time of 18.41.
Meaghan Jackson placed 18th in the shot put with a toss of 10.62 meters.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, March 12, as they host the York Relays beginning at 10:00 am.
