HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The York College women's tennis team closed out their 2013 spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C. with a pair of close losses on Thursday. The Spartans dropped a 5-4 decision to St. Louis Pharmacy and then fell to Alvernia 6-3 in the night cap.
The Spartans fall to 2-6 for the campaign.
In the St. Louis Pharmacy match, the Spartans captured two of the three doubles matches to take the early lead. Emily Price (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) and Nikki Olson (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) combined to notch an 8-4 win in the second doubles match. Emily Skutnik (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and Lauren Valles (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) then recorded an 8-6 win in the third doubles match.
York would not be as fortunate in the singles matches as St. Louis Pharmacy won four of the sixth singles contests. Price recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win in the fourth singles contest and Skutnik rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the sixth singles match. Olson and Valles each dropped three set decisions in their respective singles matches.
Against Alvernia, the Spartans again captured two of the three doubles matches. Olson and Price won the second doubles match 8-5 and Skutnik and Valles cruised to an 8-2 win in the third doubles contest.
York couldn't carry over the momentum into the singles matches, as senior Megan McCullin (New Windsor, Md./Westminster Senior) was the lone Spartan to win. McCullin earned a hard-fought three set win in the second singles match.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday when they open up their Capital Athletic Conference schedule with a trip to Salisbury University. The match is slated for a 3:30 pm start in Salisbury, Md.
