Record Day Propels Spartans Over Blue Jays

YORK, Pa. – The York College men's swim team swam to a triumphant 121-57 defeat of the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays Saturday afternoon in the York College Natatorium. The afternoon saw two records fall as freshman Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J. / Pompton Lakes), sophomore Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Ca. / Rio Mesa), junior Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del. / William Penn), and junior Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridley) teamed up to set the pool record in the 200 yard medley relay; Walthall would go on to set the school record in 100 yard breaststroke.

The afternoon started of with the record setting performance in the 200 yard medley relay. Stoll kicked the event off with a 26.49 split in the backstroke portion of the event. Walthall tackled the breaststroke portion with a split of 25.51. Latchford contributed a 24.59 split in the butterfly laps. Bonner completed the event with a split time of 21.90. The new York College Natatorium pool record stands at 1:38.49.

In the first individual event of the day, sophomore David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md. / James Hubert Blake) and freshman Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) combined to take the top two spots in the 1,000 yard freestyle event. Altobelli's 11:07.89 garnered first place points, while DeCoursey's 11:15.31 posted second place points.

The Green and White saw Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del. / Caravel Academy), Walthall, and Latchford complete the trifecta in the 200 yard freestyle. Bryant set the pace with a time of 1:50.94. Walthall would finish less than a second later by touching the wall at 1:51.80. Latchford rounded out the top three in 1:54.25.

The 50 yard freestyle brought another 1-2-3 finish for the Spartans. Bonner paced the field by sprinting to a 22.63 finish. Freshmen Matt Terrell (Pottstown, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts) and Cameron Byrne would follow Bonner with times of 23.55 and 23.67, respectively.

The dominance continued as Stoll, Wynne Kirchner (Elkridge, Md. / Howard), and Adam Schin (Lewisberry, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) earned top three points for the Green and White. Stoll topped the field with a time of 2:12.91. Kirchner followed with a time of 2:15.58. Schin rounded out the top three with a 2:17.66.

Latchford and Schin would continue to contribute in the 100 yard butterfly. Latchford's time of 55.76 chalked first place points to the Spartan leger. Schin touched the wall in third place with a time of 1:01.85.

The Green and White would add another 1-2-3 finish in the 100 yard freestyle contest. Hughes bested the field with a 49.22. Freshman Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa. / Coatesville) followed with a time of 51.76. Byrne would add a 52.09 performance to round out the top three.

Stoll, Altobelli, and sophomore Martin Schmidt (Pilesgrove, N.J. / Woodstown) got in on the trifecta action in the 100 yard backstroke. Stoll's 56.93 bested the field, as Altobelli would finish second with a 1:04.46. Schmidt would touch the wall in 1:02.03.

The men would go on to exhibition the remaining events. Terrell swam a 5:18.44 in the 500 yard freestyle. Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa. / Strath Haven) completed his 500 yard freestyle in 5:19.10, while DeCoursey finished his 20 laps in 5:25.07.

The 100 yard breaststroke would see Walthall, who swam the event as an exhibition, set the new school record. Recording split times of 27.63 and 31.49, Walthall's new record stands at 59.12.

The Green and White now stand at 2-0 on the young campaign. They will return to action on Friday November, 1 when they take on conference foe Mary Washington in a 6:00 pm contest.
