YORK, PA – The York College women's swimming team looks to break into the upper echelon of the Capital Athletic Conference in the 2013-2014 season. Head coach Erin Kurtz has complied a deep and talented team with the their collective sight set on improvement and a top spot in the CAC.
The Green and White aim to improve on last season's 6-8 finish that culminated in a fourth place finish at the conference championship meet in St. Mary's, MD in mid-February.
The Spartans will lean on their veterans to provide leadership in the pool. Leading the charge will be seniors Jenny Hinkle (Olney, Md. / Sherwood), Kelsie Pike (Newark, Del. / St. Mark's), Megan Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck), and Danielle Marino (Wind Gap, Pa. / Nazareth). Hinkle has been an integral part of the Spartan lineup, as she provides experience and the constant ability to score in the distance freestyle events. Pike has been a big part of York's success in a wide variety of ways as she can score in each of the breaststroke, butterfly, and medley events. Murphy provides Kurtz with depth and experience in the backstroke and freestyle contests; while Marino is an intregal part of the breaststroke events.
The Spartans junior class consists of see six returners from last year's squad. Lindsey Buglino (Wharton, N.J. / Jefferson) is coming off a record setting performance last season. Buglino now holds York's records in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:15.16 and the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:46.72. Courtney Dacheux (Dover, Pa. / Dover) brings experience and the ability to score at will to the Spartan lineup. She will be a big part in the freestyle races all season. Sammy Greenwald (Germantown, Md. / Northwest) adds depth and a strong desire to succeed to the table. Her drive and determination will radiate throughout the team.
Casenya Stone (Annandale, Va. / The New School of Virginia) helps in a talented group of freestyle swimmers. Dana Taylor (Andover, N.J. / Lenape Valley Regional) will provide all-important depth to the backstroke and medley events. Meg Walker (New Castle, Del. / Pencader Charter) will bring experience and depth to the butterfly and medly events. Megan Shannon (Hanover, Pa. / South Western) returns to help in the deep pool of freestyle specialists.
Lone sophomore Madison Tonkay (Landisville, Pa. / Hempfield) has been tagged by Kurtz as an important swimmer to the distance events.
Kurtz brings in four new faces for the 2013-2014 campaign. Maria Allera (Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake), Ashley McManus (Lavern, Pa. / Great Valley), Taylor Michielini (Montvale, N.J. / Pascack Hills), and Samantha Wingate (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridely) will learn from the veterans what it takes to be successful collegiate swimmers.
Allera will be a vital part in the lineup providing versatility in the distance freestyle and butterfly contests. McManus and Michielini will vie for time in the water early as they gain experience and aid in the depth in the freestyle events. Wingate is the lone backstroker in the freshman class, she will team with Murphy and Greenwald to provide the Spartans with a talented group.
The Spartans 2013-2014 campaign kicks off on Saturday October 5 when Capital Athletic Conference foe Frostburg State visits the York College Natatorium.
