Guild Crushes 500 School Record; Spartans in Fourth after Day One

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Michaela Guild and the York College women's swimming team kicked off the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championships on Friday at St. Mary's College of Maryland. For their efforts, the Spartans finished day one of the three-day event in fourth-place with 101 team points.

Guild, a senior Spartan, put together a spectacular day for the Green and White in the 500 freestyle. In the morning preliminaries, Guild shattered her own previous school record of 5:21.14 with an impressive 5:14.34 to lower the mark by over six seconds. That time allotted the senior with the third spot heading into the finals. In those finals, which proved to be an exciting event, Guild drifted toward the back eventually swimming in sixth place. However, according to Guild, with about 200 yards left she began to make a move toward the front before kicking it in over the last 100. During that time, she moved up three spots to take third with a 5:15.44, finishing less than a second in front of fourth. This marks Guild's first individual medal at the CAC Championships throughout her Spartan record-breaking career.

In the relays, both York squads registered fourth-place times. Leading off the evening finals with the 200 freestyle relay. Courtney Dacheux, Megan Shannon, Anna Schuster, and Chelsea Ross combined to post a 1:43.57.

On the other end of the evening, the 400 medley closed out the women's portion of the first day as Ross, Lindsey Buglino, Schuster, and Dacheux came in with a 4:17.64 effort. York came into the championships with a seed time of 4:26.38.

Dacheux registered an individual top-eight finish in the 50 freestyle. A freshman in just her first CAC Championships, the talented Dacheux qualified for the finals with a preliminary time of 25.65. She netted eighth-place points for the Green and White and recorded 25.72 finals time.

Sophomore Jenny Hinkle qualified for the finals in the 500 freestyle, having posted a top-16 time from the preliminaries. Hinkle would go on to notch a personal-record 5:20.39 as she knocked off over eight seconds from her time during last year's championships. Her 5:20.39 allotted the second-year Spartan 10th-place overall.

York returns to action on Saturday with the morning preliminaries beginning at 10:00 am and finals scheduled for 6:00 pm.
