FROSTBURG, Md. – The York College women's swimming squad effectively recovered from Friday's loss to Millersville as the Spartans picked up a decisive 136-69 triumph at Frostburg St. Saturday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. The Green and White put together an outstanding meet as they posted top times in 13 of the 14 events in Frostburg's meter pool.
Just as she has done all season, Michaela Guild yet again had a tremendous performance. The junior swimmer captured three meet-best times against the Bobcats, as she finished first in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:26.79), 400-meter freestyle (5:06.45), and 200-meter IM (2:44.44).
Sophomore Chelsea Ross and freshman Anna Schuster also registered quality showings for the Green and White as both posted top times in two races. Ross backed up a victory last night (200 free) with triumphs in tonight's 100-meter backstroke (1:13.90) and 100-meter freestyle (1:05.04). Schuster, who also picked up an individual win yesterday (200 IM), snagged the 200-meter freestyle with a 2:25.65 and then recorded the best time in the 100-meter fly (1:14.88).
In addition to Guild, Ross, and Schuster, four more Spartans registered top times. In the 800-meter freestyle, rookie Jenny Hinkle touched the wall first turning in a 10:33.83. Alison Beverly notched a 2:53.98 to secure first-place in the 200-meter butterfly while Kathy Murphy put together a 2:42.68 in her 200-meter backstroke victory. Freshman Kelsie Pike captured her triumph in the 200-meter breaststroke as she finished with a 3:04.49.
Both Spartan relay squads registered meet-best times. Murphy, Pike, Schuster, and Ross combined in the 200-meter medley relay to post a 2:18.02 while Pike Ross, Schuster, and Guild put up a 2:02.49 in the 200-meter freestyle relay.
Along with their numerous top finishes, the Green and White also recorded seven individual runner-up times. Katelyn Romm posted a 2:34.76 in the 200-meter free while Meg Dailey's 3:01.73 in the 200-meter butterfly was good for second-place. Bethany Moore registered 31.31 in the 50-meter free while Amanda Silcox's 2:46.29 in the 200-meter backstroke and Alex Minsky's 3:08.33 in the 200-meter breaststroke notched runner-up finishes. Pike (100-meter butterfly) and Hinkle (200-meter IM) also claimed second-best times.
With their regular season now complete, the Spartans look toward February's CAC Championships. The Green and White are slated to travel to St. Mary's City, Md. for the three-day meet held February 18-20 at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
