Four Score as York Women March to Victory
YORK Pa.- The York College Spartans (9-3-2) downed the Wesley Wolverines (4-9-1) with a dominating 4-0 victory on a beautiful October evening.
The game opened up with an early threat from the Wolverines as their offense pressured near the goal, but the Spartan defense, led by Dale Mason (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy). Then the Spartan attack collected itself and worked to secure pressure against the Wolverine defense. The Spartans had four corner kicks in four minutes, but failed to secure a shot-on-goal. Then almost 32 minutes into the game Beth Bunn (Lothian, Md. / Calverton School) launched a perfect pass from the middle of the field. A streaking Clare Chatham (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) found the pass and faced a one-on-one with the Wesley goalie, Sam Brannigan. Chatham, the Spartan team leader in assists, fired the shot to the right and secured her 4th goal on the year. The Spartans were able to take Chatham's goal, into the half with continued offensive pressure.
The second half opened in typical Spartan fashion, with vigor to attack any opposing goalie. York pushed the ball down deep into Wesley territory and positioned themselves for a great opportunity. Chatham fired a shot looking to get her second goal of the day, but the ball bounced off the goalie's hands. Traci Mohl (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon Catholic) collected the rebound and buried the shot into the open net. Mohl was able to get her second goal of the year and the Spartans did not relent on their attack.
York kept the pressure off their defense and continued to press for an attack. With her team up by two with 27 minutes remaining in the game, Chelsea McDowell (Cinnaminson, N.J. / Cinnaminson) saw a great opportunity. Chelsea took the ball near her bench, and took a peak at the goal from 30 yards out. With the opportunity she fired the ball and was able to guide into the far side of the net, just beyond the Wesley goalie, Brannigan, and her outstretched arms. The game continued with a relaxed Spartan attack until the last minute of the game. The Green and White bench could be heard yelling "Score a goal, Ali." A shot ricocheted off Brannigan's hands and freshman Ali Schoppe (Plymouth Meeting, Pa. / Plymouth Whitemarsh) listened to her teammates and netted her first goal of the season. The Spartans played out the last 43 seconds to close the game with a 4-0 victory.
York finished the day with an impressive 31 shots on the day with 16 shots being on goal. The three goalies for York, Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md. / Thomas Stone), Stevie Lukacz (Leesport, Pa. / Schuylkill Valley), and Kate Lutte (Catasauqua, Pa. / Catasauqua) all appeared in the game with Glessner recording the only save of the game.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, October 19 at Christopher Newport in a battle of the top two teams in the CAC. Kickoff in Newport News is set for 2:00 pm.
