Shots (on goal)
ARLINGTON Va. – The York College women's soccer team (7-3-2) dominated conference foe Marymount (Va.) (4-6) on their way to 4-0 victory in Virginia.
The game opened up with the relentless Spartan attack. Jordan Neiheiser (Reading, Pa. / Berks Catholic) started the shooting with a bullet that forced Marymount goalie, April Westmark, to make a tough save. The Spartans continued the pressure by keeping the ball on their side of the field. Twelve minutes into the game, Clare Chatham (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) fired a shot that just slipped past the goalie to sink into the net. Chatham, usually a Spartan assist machine, secured her first goal of the season.
The Spartan assault did not let up after the Chatham goal, and kept pushing the ball to the Saint's defenders. With 24 minutes into the game, the Spartans looked at another golden opportunity. Kayla Kovalsky (Merrick, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) lined up a solid shot and fired hard into the net to secure the second goal of the game. The Spartans took Kovalsky's goal into the half with a 2-0 lead.
The second half opened with much the same first half action. Just seven minutes into the half Chelsea McDowell (Cinnaminson, N.J. / Cinnaminson) had an opportunity. The sophomore took the ball and lined up a shot that was too hard to stop. McDowell was able to get her first goal of the season, and the Spartans were able to take the 3-0 lead. York kept the unrelenting attack going and opened themselves to another scoring opportunity. Kovalsky took another pass and set herself up for a memorable game. The junior fired and scored her second goal of the game. The Spartans took the 4-0 lead all the way to the end of the game.
The Spartans won the game off of two saves from Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md. / Thomas Stone), who added almost 69 minutes to her scoreless streak. The Spartans were able to take their third shutout in a row and their sixth shutout on the season. The Spartans held a 25-3 shot advantage in the 4-0 win.
The Spartans will look to continue their shutout streak on Saturday at Mary Washington at 1:00 pm.
