Women's Soccer Locks Up Third Seed in CAC Tournament

DOVER, DEL. – The York College women's soccer team locked up the third seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with a 2-0 win at Wesley College on Saturday night in Dover, Delaware.

The Spartans improve to 8-2-5 overall and 3-1-2 in the conference. The Wolverines fall to 7-8-1 overall and 1-5 in the conference. The Spartans finished tied with Mary Washington in the conference standings but the Green and White earned the second tiebreaker after the two teams tied in their regular season meeting, giving York the third seed.

The Spartans were on the offensive from the start of the game as they applied heavy pressure to Wolverine keeper Sydney Kahan and the Wesley defense. The Spartans peppered Kahan with nine first half shots including six shots on target but the Wolverine keeper was up to the task with six saves as the teams went to the half knotted in a scoreless tie.

The Green and White broke through early in the second half as freshman Ali Schoppe (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) picked up her second goal of the season as she notched an unassisted goal 6:04 into the second half. Both of Schoppe's goals have been game-winners for York in 2012.

Sophomore Elizabeth Bunn (Lothian, Md./Calverton School) gave the Spartans' an insurance goal 6:11 later as she scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year, an unassisted tally at the 57:15 mark.

The Spartan offense continued to play well but they would be unable to find the net again as York settled for the 2-0 win.

York finished the game with a 25-6 edge in total shots including a 16-3 margin in shots on goal. York had a 7-0 bulge in corner kicks in the win.

Sophomore goalie Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) recorded her school-record 12th shutout of the year as she made three stops.

Kahan was outstanding in limiting the Spartans to just two goals as she made 14 saves in the loss.

The Spartans conclude their regular season on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Washington, DC to face the Catholic Cardinals. Kick off is set for 4:00 pm.
