OT Heartbreaker Ends York's 2011 Campaign
Shots (on goal)
YORK, Pa. – The York College women's soccer team saw their 2011 campaign come to an abrupt end Sunday afternoon, as they fell to visiting Mary Washington 2-1 in overtime in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Spartans conclude the year with a 7-11 mark while the Eagles improve to 9-6-2 and move on to face top-seeded Salisbury in Wednesday's CAC Semifinals.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the Spartans struck first on Jena Arnister's second goal of the season as she tallied in the 57th minute. Arnister cracked a shot from 30 yards out as her deep chance found its way over the head of Tina Brehm and into the Mary Washington goal. The junior forward's tally put the Spartans up 1-0 in the playoff match.
Unable to add that insurance tally however, the Eagles drew the score level in the 74th minute. Excy Herrera collected a loose ball, getting in behind the Spartan defense along the right side. Herrera then provided a pinpoint service as she found Kelsey Carter on the back post. Carter put her head to the ball and redirected back across the goal and in for her fifth tally of the season.
With the match spilling into overtime, York nearly won the match twice in the first extra session. In the 94th minute, the Green and White had an opportunity on a Beth Bunn corner kick. Then, late in the 96th minute, senior midfielder Stephanie Rice struck a shot that forced Brehm into a collapse save.
It would be Mary Washington however, that found pay dirt in overtime. Erin Reynolds hit a shot that initially stopped but followed her own attempt, putting home the game-winner.
For the game, the Spartans held a 14-9 lead in shots while also owning a 6-2 advantage in corners.
In the final game of her strong career, senior goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel recorded a five saves for the Green and White. Brehm also finished with five stops for Mary Washington.
With the heart-breaking defeat, the Spartans bid adieu to their six seniors as Phillips, Rice, Spanarkel, Lauren Ward, Kathryn Leyendecker, and Emily Cook close out their careers. Over the past four seasons, York has accumulated 39 victories including a strong 22-8-2 record in CAC regular season play while also making an appearance in the 2008 CAC Tournament Championship match.
