YORK, Pa. – The York College women's soccer team dropped their season-opener Thursday afternoon as they suffered a 4-0 setback to visiting Scranton. The loss gives the Spartans a 0-1 record to start the campaign while the Royals begin the 2011 season with a 1-0 start.
The visitors, fresh off an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2010, tallied their first of the day in the 22nd minute. Forward Samantha Russo finished off her opportunity in front of the net to begin the Royals scoring effort.
Going 1-0 into the halftime break, Scranton poured in two more early in the second frame. In the 52nd minute, Sarah Gibbons netted the Royals' second as she finished following a corner kick from Sydney Parker. Less than eight minutes later, Russo tallied her second of the day to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Amanda Kresge completed Scranton's scoring in the 71st minute as she finished yet another Parker corner. Kresge's first goal of the season provided the final 4-0 result.
For the game, Scranton led the shots total 17-7 as their stingy defense, which recorded 14 shutouts last season, limited the Spartan chances.
Kelsy McAnelly picks up the victory in the Royal goal as she notched one save over her 82:26 of play. Cecily Mullin finished off the final 7:34 in the victory.
The Green and White will now look to quickly shake off the opening loss as they return to action on Sunday, September 4. York is slated to host Misericordia in a 1:00 pm non-conference tilt.
