Spartans Offense Struggles in Loss to Alvernia
READING, PA – The York College women's soccer squad continued their early season struggles with a 3-0 setback at Alvernia University in a non-conference contest on Monday. The Spartans fall to 1-5-1 overall while the Crusaders improve to 5-2-1.
Alvernia was powered Amy Meace as she notched a pair of goals in the victory. Meace opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with an unassisted goal. She then closed out the scoring in the 80th minute on a penalty kick.
In between Meace's scores, Brittany Adamski converted a Kelsey Gill pass for the Crusaders' second goal of the game in the matches' 61st minute.
The Crusaders outshot the Spartans 17-10 including dominating the second half shots, 13-3. Alvernia also held a 4-2 margin in corner kicks.
The Spartans managed four shot on goal in the first half but Crusader goalie Kirsten Kelley was up to the challenge in keeping the Green and White off the board. Kelley finished the match with five saves in notching the shutout.
Three Spartan goalies saw time in net for York. Sarah Spanarkel started and allowed two goals in her 63:50 of work. Spanarkel registered four saves for York. Senior Desiree Halaka played 15:15 and made two saves in allowing Meace's penalty kick goal. Sophomore Katie Meehan played the final 10:55 and did not have to make a save and did not surrender a goal.
The Spartans return to Capital Athletic Conference action on Thursday afternoon when they host Hood College in a league match. Game time is slated for 4:30 pm at Graham Field.
