Spartan Wrestling Splits Friday Afternoon Matches
WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The York College wrestling squad split their two afternoon matches at the 2014 Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA.
York dropped their first round consolation match to Wisconsin Stevens Point, 25-14, and then picked up a victory against Case Western Reserve, 26-23.
The loss against the Pointers was much closer than the final 11-point WSP margin of victory. The Spartans trailed early as the Pointers captured the 125 pound bout. The Spartans' Ryan Flynn (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) tied the match with a 6-4 win at 133 pounds. Junior Joey Giaccio (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) put the Spartans up 8-3 with an impressive 20-4 tech fall victory over David Granatelli.
The Pointers won the next three weight classes to take a 13-8 lead through the 165 pound bout. Freshmen Mitchell Ramsey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and Nick Zak (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) both won to get the Spartans back on top, 14-13, heading into the final two weight classes. Ramsey won the 174-pound bout with a 3-1 sudden victory while Zak notched his second win of the day with an 8-1 decision in the 184 pound bout.
The Pointers put the match away with pin fall wins at 197 and 285 to earn the 11-point win.
Case Western jumped out to a quick start in the nightcap as Josh Hall earned a pin fall win for CWR. Sophomore Trevor Baez-Hernandez (Bendersville, Pa./Biglerville) picked up his second win of the day with a 13-4 major decision over Jeff Gould, drawing the York Spartans to within two of the Case Western Reserve Spartans, 6-4.
Giaccio had another fantastic match as the junior posted a 17-1 tech fall win at 141 pounds. Case Western tied the match at nine with a victory at 149 but York's Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) put the Green and White up 15-9 with a pin fall win at 157. Case Western Reserve got a win at 165 and a come-from-behind pin at 174 as it looked like the Spartans from Ohio would pick up the match win. Zak continued his perfect Friday with a dominating pin fall win at 184, putting the Spartans on top 21-18 with two weight classes left. Case Western notched a tech fall win at 197 to take a 23-21 lead heading into the heavyweight match. Sophomore Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) was awarded a forfeit victory as the Spartans captured the team victory.
York concludes their stay in the duals with a match against RIT on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm in Williamsport.
