Spartan Wrestling Set to Host Loaded New Standard Corporation Invitational Saturday
YORK, PA - The York College Wrestling team will play host to one of the biggest early season tournaments Saturday in York. The 12-team New Standard Corporation Invitational will be an exciting all day event that features three of the top 12 teams in the nation and 13 nationally ranked wrestlers throughout the 10 weight classes.
The wrestling will start at 8:30 a.m. with the finals closing out the day with the championship round scheduled for a 6:00 pm start. The Spartan wrestlers will face wrestlers from UMBC, TCNJ, Apprentice School, Elizabethtown, USMMA, SUNY-Brockport, Ithaca, Johnson & Wales, Delaware Valley, John Hopkins, and USCGA.
The Spartans are looking to continue their recent positive momentum. The team will be led by Joey Giaccio (Cranford, N.J. / Cranford) at 141, Mitchell Ramsey (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) at 184, and Zach Coleman (Belcamp, Md. / Harford Technical) at 197. The Spartans have had three individual champions in the previous four editions of the tournament. York has finished third in three of the previous four tournaments.
Ithaca College brings the seventh ranked squad to York. The Bombers have won all four of the previous New Standard Invitationals. Alex Gomez will look to lead the Bombers, as he is the op ranked wrestler at 133. The Bombers also boast the 7th ranked wrestler at 141in Dominick Giacolone. Anthony Cabrera was the 133-pound champion at last year's invitational and is currently 4-1 at 125 pounds this year.
Delaware Valley will enter the New Standard Invitational with a loaded squad ranked ninth in the nation. The Aggies are led by nationally ranked Aaron Karns at 197, and Emmanual Ajagbe at 157. Karns is ranked second in his weight class and boasts a record of 6-1. Ajagbe, the defending invitational champion at 149 pounds, has yet to see the mat in 2013-14. Junior Vinny Fava is ranked tenth in the nation at 149 pounds as he is 5-0. Freshman heavyweight Zack Roseberry is ranked tenth in the nation in his weight class. The Aggies will look to face the stiff competition down as they wrestle for only the second time this season.
Johnson and Wales is the third nationally ranked team in the field as the Wildcats are ranked 12th in the most recent poll. The Wildcats finished second at the early November Ithaca Invitational followed by a second place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational. Colin Lenhardt leads the Wildcats as he is ranked ninth in the nation at 184 pounds. Lenhardt owns a team-leading 10 wins including six pinfall victories. Everet Desilets is perfect at 9-0 with five pins at 157 pounds.
The College of New Jersey brings a challenging squad that has a young promising squad. Senior captain Brian Broderick leads the Lions at 184. Broderick boasts 93 career wins while he is ranked number one in the nation at 184 while he is also the defending New Standard champion. Zach Zotollo is another senior leader that will loke to light up the mat at 174 as he is ranked ninth in the nation.
Elizabethtown College brings a squad familiar with the York campus as they dropped a 21-12 decision at York on November 26. The Blue Jays are lead by national qualifier Julian Meaney at 184 and Buck Kauffman at 165. Julian Meaney is 1-1 in limited action this season while brother Jesse Meaney is currently 4-1 at 149 pounds.
Johns Hopkins University will enter the New Standard Corporation Invitational with high hopes for their wrestling squad. Paul Bewak leads the Blue Jays at 125 pounds where he is undefeated on the year. He is the defending invitational champion at 125 and is ranked fourth in the nation. At 133 pounds, Ray Yagloski will be another lightweight contender for the Blue Jays.
University of Maryland Baltimore County fields a tough club wrestling team that is led by its 149 pounder Martin Mitchell and 184 pounder Alec Pence. Mitchell is strong wrestler who looks for many bonus point opportunities, while Pence is a senior captain with much experience. The Retrievers placed third at the Messiah Invitational on November 2.
The Apprentice School will enter the New Standard Invite with a tough squad that will be lead by their heavyweight, Ian Jones. Jones dominated the Electric City Duals where he went 5-0. The Builders also boast a challenger at 174 with sophomore Philip Porto. The team will look to bring a big challenge despite having no seniors on the squad.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy will wrestle for only their second time this season at the New Standard Invitational. Senior Josh Miller will look to continue his early season pin start on Saturday. Heavyweight Brian Walker is 4-1 after finishing fifth at the New York State Championships.
The State University of New York Brockport comes to York with an impressive early season opening. The Eagles have a trio of wrestlers looking to make some noise in Grumbacher. Jordan Dyer (149), Adam Troy (149), and Paul Glover (197) will look to set the tone for the Eagles. Glover is ranked eighth in the nation for the Golden Eagles.
The US Coast Guard Academy is the final team to enter the Invite on Saturday. Nate Giorgio will lead his team as he is ranked fourth in the nation at 133 pounds. The Coast Guard will also look to senior Luke Taylor at 174 to be a challenger at the invite.
