Bastress Gets First and Second Wins of Young Career

ALLIANCE, Oh. - Coach Duane Bastress earned his first career win in the first match of the day as the York wrestling team downed Muskingum 47-6.  The Spartans also faced Thiel, Mount Union, and John Carrol and were able to finish 2-2 on the day.

In the first match of the day, York faced Muskingum and the team wrestled with fire to a 47-6 victory.  The match was a dominating show of wrestling prowess as the Spartans never once allowed a lead. Ryan Flynn (Newtown Square Pa. / Marple Newtown) had a tech fall win at 133, and Nicholas Zak (Jackson, N.J. / Jackson Liberty) also had a tech fall win at 184.  The Spartans had two pins in their first match of the day with Zach Coleman (Belcamp, Md. / Harford Technical) getting his pin at 184 in just 22 seconds.  Joey Giacco (Cranford, N.J. / Cranford) had his pin at 141 pounds in 5:45 into the match.  John Allenson (Glenside, Pa. / Germantown Academy) and Austin Barley (York, Pa. / Spring Grove) also secured wins at 149 and 165, respectively.  Muskingum gave the Spartans three forfeits, at 125, 157, and 174, to help the Spartans secure the 47-6 victory. 

In the second match of the day the Spartans faced Thiel College with a 28-16 loss.  Trevor Baez Hernandez (Bendersville, Pa. / Biglerville) opened up the York scoring with a pin in 4:20 at 133, to give the Spartans a 3-6 lead.  Giacco furthered the score to 10-3 with a huge 17-7 major decision at 141. Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa. / Line Mountain) had a 7-4 decision at 157 to keep the Spartan lead to 13-7. Thiel battled back to tie the score with a pin at 165, and take a16-13 lead with a decision at 174.  Nicholas Zak helped tie up the match with a crucial 7-5 decision with his match at 184.  Thiel was able to take the last two matches with pins to seize control of the match for their 28-16 win over the Spartans

In the third match of the day, York faced Mount Union for a big wrestling match up at noon.  The Spartans may have lost the match 28-6 but the team wrestled hard and limited any big scoring matches.  The Spartans allowed 5 decisions to limit the Raider's scoring.  Mitchell Ramsey (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) had the big win in the match with an 11-8 decision with his match at 174.  Coleman picked up the other win in the match at 197 with a 9-4 decision.  It was a well wrestled match that showed the resiliency of the Spartans squad.

The Spartans wrapped their day up with a victorious match against John Carroll. The Spartans squeaked out a 21-18 victory to give head coach Duane Bastress his second career victory. Trevor Baez got his send pin of the day at 133, to give the Spartans an early 6-4 lead.  Giacco baked up that effort with a dominating 7-0 victory at 141.  John Allenson (Glenside, Pa. / Germantown Academy) kept the Spartan win streak alive with a 4-2 decision at 149, which gave the Spartans a big 12-4 lead. John Carroll battled back to tie the score at 12, but Ramsey secured his second decision win of the day at 174.  John Carroll battled back again and tied the score at 15. Then at 197, Coleman wrestled the most important match of the day.  In just 1:58, he nabbed his second pin of the day to give the Spartans the permanent lead.   The Spartans held off a John Carroll attack at heavyweight to get the Spartans a 21-18 victory on the day.
