ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The 15th ranked York College wrestling squad closed out their regular season with a 25-19 loss at Elizabethtown College on Friday night in Elizabethtown, Pa.
The Spartans finish the dual meet season with a mark of 18-7 overall while the Blue Jays improve to 6-3.
The Blue Jays took the early lead with a forfeit win at 125 pounds. The Spartans' Joey Giaccio (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) got York on the board with a 16-4 major decision victory at 133 pounds.
The Blue Jays pushed their lead to 9-4 with a 3-2 decision at 141 pounds. Nationally ranked Vinny Pisani (Orange, Calif./El Modena) rolled to a 23-9 major decision win at 149 pounds as the Spartans drew to within 9-8. York took their first lead of the night when Drew Spector (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) registered a 15-0 tech fall over Mike Lammer as the Spartans took a 13-8 lead. York's T.J. Demetrio (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) pushed the York advantage to 19-8 with a second-period pin fall win at 165 pounds.
Unfortunately for York, the Blue Jays would sweep the final four weight classes to provide for the Spartans' final six-point deficit. The Blue Jays got a major decision at 174, a pin fall win at 184 and decisions at 197 and 285.
The dual meet was the final regular season competition for Spartan head coach Tom Kessler. Kessler, who is concluding his Spartan coaching career at the end of the year. Kessler finishes the regular season with an overall mark of 322-140-3 in his 21 years at the helm of the program.
York will head to Ada, Ohio on Saturday, March 2 to compete in the NCAA Division III Regional Meet hosted by Ohio Northern. The tournament starts at 9:00 am.
