MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The York College wrestling squad won the Mid Penn Duals for the second year in a row on Saturday afternoon at Millersville University. The Spartans first took on Millersville and won 27 to 15. In the championship match, the Spartans beat Franklin & Marshall 22-16.
With the wins, the Spartans are now 16-5 overall.
The Green and White started out strong against Millersville. Kenny Arentz (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) got things going with a pin in 1:53 at 125. Up next, Joey Giaccio (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) earned himself a 22-6 technical fall in 6:40 in the 133-pound weight class. Vinny Pisani (Orange, Ca./ El Modena) continued to look good this season, with a 14-4 victory. Drew Spector (West Deptford, N.J./ West Deptford/West Deptford) followed up with a close 6-4 win at 157. In the 165-pound weight class, T.J. Demetrio (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) recorded a pin in 2:53. In the last four bouts, the Spartans only won in the 184-pound weight class. Jeffrey Goldhagen (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) earned a 9-2 victory. Despite struggling in the heavier weight classes, the Spartans had gained enough of a lead to hold onto the win.
In the final match, the Spartans faced a tough Franklin & Marshall squad. Arentz opened up big once again for the Green and White with an 8-0 major decision. The Diplomats took victories in the next two weight classes. Pisani recorded his second win of the day with a 7-2 decision. Demetrio edged out his opponent 9-8 and Goldhagen earned a 9-4 win. Kyle Minogue (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) redeemed himself from his first matchup with a pin in 6:03 to help the Spartans pull away for the championship title.
The Spartans return to action in York on Thursday January 25 to take on Elizabethtown at 7:00 pm.
