Spartans Go 3-0 and Advance to Whitehill Semifinals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The York College wrestling squad won all three of its matches on the first day of the Budd Whitehill Duals Friday at Lycoming College. The Spartans defeated Thiel 25-15, then clobbered Case Western Reserve 49-0. In the Green and White's final match of the day, York beat TCNJ 17-16 in an extremely close battle.

York now holds a 13-4 overall record.

York started out strong in its first match of the day. Kenny Arentz (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin), the Spartans first wrestler kicked things off by earning a pin in just 1:49 in the 125-pound weight class. Up next was Joey Giaccio (Cranford, N.J./Cranford), who recorded a 15-3 major decision victory over Thiel's 133-pound wrestler Nick Sutton. In the 149-pound weight class, Vinny Pisani (Orange, Ca./El Modena) looked strong for the Spartans earning a 22-6 technical pin in 5:00. T.J. Demetrio (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) helped extend the Green and White's lead with a close 6-5 win at 165. Senior Kyle Minogue (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) continued to look strong this season with a 15-4 major decision win in the 197-pound weight class. Last up for the Spartans in the heavyweight spot, Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains N.J./Pequannock Township) finished the match with a 7-2 victory.

In the second match of the day, the Spartan dominated. York was able to hold Case Western Reserve scoreless for the Spartans first shutout of the season. To start, the Green and White got an automatic win after a forfeit in the 125-pound weight class. Trevor Baez-Hernandez (Bendersville, Pa./Biglerville) stepped up at 133 and recorded a pin in just 1:13. Chuck Glatz (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) then earned a victory by another forfeit. Pisani, Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain), Drew Spector (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) and Demetrio all earned major decision wins. In the 184-pound weight class, Korey Eberly (York, Pa./Red Lion) registered a pin in 3:38. Minogue stepped up after Eberly and in 0:52 pinned Pierce Curran. The only close bout of the match was in the heavyweight division. Spencer eventually ended up with a 2-1 win to close out the lopsided match.

Against TCNJ, the Spartans finished the match in a tie at 16. The Green and White ended up with the tiebreaker and a 17-16 win because they finished the match with more total points scored TCNJ, 43-42. TCNJ won the first bout of the match at 125 pounds. Giaccio earned himself an 8-0 major decision in the 133-pound weight class. Pisani looked strong for the Spartans at 149 with an 8-2 victory. Spector earned himself a close 4-3 win at 157. Jeffrey Goldhagen (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) dug deep to keep the match close with a 5-3 win in the 184-pound weight class. Spencer stepped up once again in the heavyweight division to earn a 3-2 win that tied the match and eventually led to the Spartans closing out another victory.

The Spartans return to action Saturday, January 12 for semifinals of the Budd Whitehall Duals beginning at 9:30 am.
