Spartan Wrestling Ties School Record with 21st Win

WESTMINSTER, MD – The York College wrestling team closed out a banner 2010-11 regular season with a 28-9 victory at McDaniel on Friday night in Westminster, MD. The Spartans, who are ranked 15th in the nation, improve to 21-5-1 overall. The 21 wins tie a school record for victories in a season. McDaniel falls to 6-12 for the campaign.

The Green Terror jumped out to a quick lead with a sudden victory win at 125 pounds. Freshman Sergo Grigorian got the Spartans even at three with a 7-1 victory at 133 pounds. Freshman Victor Signorelli put York up with a 3-1 sudden victory at 141 pounds. The victories for Grigorian and Signorelli were the 11th for both of Spartan freshmen.

Sophomore Chris Gugliotti notched his 20th win of the year as he posted a 14-2 major decision at 149 pounds as the Spartan lead grew to 10-3. Senior Albert Gleichauf pushed the Spartan lead to 13-3 with an 8-7 win at 157 pounds. Freshman Trent Bond notched a 10-2 major decision victory for York at 165 pounds.

Junior Matt Heisey recorded his 21st win of the year as he shutout Chris Urps 6-0 in the 174-pound bout as the Spartan lead swelled to 20-3. Nationally ranked junior Alex Martocello notched win number 25 for the season as he recorded an 18-2 tech fall win at 184 pounds. Martocello is ranked ninth in the nation, as he is now 25-4. Junior George Saliba continued his outstanding season with a 7-3 win at 197 pounds. Saliba, who is ranked tenth in the nation, improves to 21-2 with the victory.

The Green Terror got a forfeit win at heavyweight to provide for the final score.

The Spartans now prepare for the 2011 Metropolitan Conference Wrestling Championships on Sunday, February 27 at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The tournament kicks off at 9:30 am and is the national qualifying tournament for the Spartans.
