#12 Spartans Take Fifth at Whitehill Duals
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The #12 York College wrestling squad posted an outstanding 3-0 day and finished fifth at the 23rd Annual Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa. Overall, the Spartans went 5-1 during the tournament to improve to 16-4-1 on the season. Standouts Chris Albright and Alex Martocello each went 6-0 during the weekend to improve to 23-1 and 19-2, respectively.
The Spartans opened up Saturday's half of the event with a 25-16 triumph over John Carroll University. After falling behind 4-0, the Green and White quickly rebounded with three straight wins. At 133, freshman Chuck Glatz scored a 6-1 decision before 141-pound #7 Albright recorded his second pinfall victory of the Whitehill Duals. Albright bested Doug Hayes just 2:21 into their bout. Chris Gugliotti finished off the three-match run with a 3-0 decision at 149 pounds, giving York a 12-4 advantage.
York would suffer three-straight losses however, including a pinfall and a major decision, which brought John Carroll back in the lead at 16-12. (JCU was penalized one team point during the 149-pound bout.)
The momentum then swung back to the Spartans' favor as the Green and White finished off the match with three consecutive triumphs. At 184 pounds, junior captain Martocello improved his record to an impressive 17-2 with a commanding 17-6 major decision over Brian Steinmetz. Kyle Minogue was then awarded a forfeit victory at 197. This gave York a 22-16 lead heading into the heavyweight bout. Senior James Laughlin finished off the Spartan win with a decision at 285 as he defeated Will Porter 4-0.
In their match against Oswego, the Spartans posted a tight 22-20 victory. The Spartans fell behind early 9-0 before Albright and Gugliotti posted back-to-back wins. In the 141-pound bout, Albright bested Chris Payne with a 15-2 major decision while Gugliotti's 8-2 result at 149 gave the York squad another three points.
Down 9-7, the Spartans dug themselves a bit deeper as Oswego snagged the next three matches. Facing a daunting 21-7 deficit, the Green and White rallied back to take the final three bouts, two of which came by needed pinfalls.
Starting at 184, Martocello picked up a huge pinfall triumph. In his second bout of the day, the junior topped Dan Sutherland 2:49 in, bringing York to within eight at 21-13. Minogue, who has wrestled exceptionally well throughout the season, followed up with a pinfall victory of his own (2:40 against Kyle Sheridan) and brought the Spartans to within two at 21-19. Following that match, Oswego incurred a team-point deduction as the Spartans were now down a single point at 20-19.
Laughlin then propelled the Green and White into the fifth-place match with an 8-3 triumph at 285. Laughlin, who is now 3-1 at the Duals, gave York the come-from-behind victory as they headed into their final match of the Whitehill Duals.
The Green and White finished off the day with a triumphant 21-18 performance in the fifth-place match against Wabash. Jerrid Hartman gave York an initial lead for the first time Saturday as he collected a 9-4 decision at 125. Two bouts later, Albright won yet again courtesy of his third pinfall of the Whitehill Duals. The talented sophomore finished the match 2:55 into his 141-pound bout with Garrett Payne.
Wabash snagged the next three bouts, taking the 149- through 165-pound weight classes. Those results gave Wabash a 12-9 lead heading into the final four matches.
York turned it around however, and registered victories over the next three bouts. Albert Gleichauf bumped up two classes from his usual 157 to record a tight 2-1 victory at 174. Martocello then backed up Gleichauf's slim triumph with one of his own as he notched a 3-2 result at 184. Now up 15-12, Minogue ensured York of fifth-place with a pinfall over Austin O'Neal 2:55 into their 197-pound bout. The Spartans did not send out a heavyweight for the final match resulting in the final 21-18 score.
The Green and White will now look to take that momentum into their next match as they return to the mat on Friday, January 21. York travels to King's for a 7:00 pm dual match.
