#12 Spartans Fall to a Pair of Top-15 Squads

Elizabethtown, Pa. – A day which began with so much promise, as the York College wrestling squad jumped up four spots to #12 in the latest NWCA poll, quickly turned sour Tuesday afternoon as the Spartans dropped a pair of matches at Elizabethtown. The Green and White fall to 11-3-1 on the season as they lost to #15 the College of New Jersey by a 22-21 margin before running into a buzzsaw in #11 Centenary and dropping a 30-6 result.

The Spartans opened up against TCNJ and fell behind early 7-0. York however, did come back to take a brief 9-6 lead. Chris Albright, who has risen three spots to #7 in the NWCA poll, won by forfeit at 141. Chris Gugliotti then posted a 7-2 decision at 149 to give the Green and White a 9-6 advantage.

New Jersey snagged each of the next four bouts to retake the lead from the Spartans and garner a 22-9 lead. York almost turned the tables during that four-bout span but both Albert Gleichauf and Alex Martocello were each defeated by just a single point at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively.

George Saliba broke TCNJ's streak with a pinfall victory at 197 pounds. The ninth-ranked 197-pounder in Division III bested Jeffrey Furbish 4:35 into their bout as Saliba improves his record to an impressive 17-2 on the season. York finished with a forfeit win for James Laughlin at 285 but TCNJ captured the 22-21 team triumph.

Against Centenary, the Green and White struggled from the outset as the Spartans were only able to manage a pair of victories. One of those triumphs came from Albright as he registers just his second decision win of the year. The talented sophomore recorded a 3-2 victory over David Alsieux to up his season mark to 19-1.

York's other win came from Martocello who notched a 9-4 triumph at 184. The junior captain bested Eric Torres to improve to 14-3 for his junior campaign.

The Spartans will look for a return to the win column at the end of this week as they travel to Lycoming, Pa. for the Budd Whitehill Duals. York, which enters the tournament as the top-seeded squad, begins the annual duals against Heidelberg on Friday morning, January 14.
