Spartans Open 2011 with Victory over Apprentice
Hampton, Va. – The York College wrestling squad picked up their ninth team victory of the 2010-2011 campaign on Friday, besting the Apprentice School 30-16 at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. The Spartans, who are currently ranked #16 according to the latest NWCA poll, improve their season mark to 9-1-1 and, in the tournament-style format, move on to face Nassau Community College Saturday afternoon.
Rookie standout Taylor Boyd got the Green and White off to a good start as he picked up an 8-1 decision over Ty Ford. York's 125-pounder snagged his ninth individual win of his freshman season while staking the Spartans to a 3-0 lead.
After a Spartan loss at 133, Chris Albright continued his dominating 2010-2011 performance at 141 pounds. Albright, who recently broke into the national top-ten in the latest NWCA poll at the #10 spot, pinned Odis Wesby 6:21 into their bout to collect his 15th win of the season. Remarkably each of his 15 wins this season has come by either major decision or pinfall.
Albright's pinfall was the first of four Spartan pins against Apprentice, and it did not take long for York to register pinfall #2. At 149 pounds, Chris Gugliotti recorded his 10th win of the year with a pinfall triumph over B.J. Compton 4:28 into the match.
Following a York loss at 157, 165-pound Matt Heisey returned the Green and White to the win column with a 9-3 decision. The junior captain's victory proves his 14th of the season and gave the Spartans an 18-10 advantage.
Martocello improves to a strong 11-2 on the season with a late-first period pinfall. His triumph gave the Spartans a comfortable 24-13 lead.
Saliba, ranked #9 in Division III, picked up the final of York's six wins as he posted a pinfall 4:13 into his bout. Saliba's victory not only moves his record to an outstanding 15-1 on the year but it gave York an insurmountable 30-13 lead.
The Spartans return to action at the Virginia Duals on Saturday at 2:00 pm. York is slated to take on Nassau Community College – who bested Johns Hopkins 30-9 – in the semifinal round. The winner of that match will advance to the championship where they will face either #14 SUNY-Brockport or King's at 8:30 pm.
