Hudson Leads #10 Spartans to Road Win at Dickinson
CARLISLE, PA – The tenth-ranked York College women's lacrosse team notched a very good 14-6 non-conference win at Dickinson College on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in Carlisle, PA.
The Spartans improve to 5-2 overall while the Red Devils suffer just their second loss as they fall to 5-2 overall.
The Red Devils opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game as Kelly Haglund recorded an unassisted goal. The Spartans responded with a three-goal spurt over the next 14 minutes of the game. Senior Jocelyn Hudson (York, Pa./Central York) kicked off the spurt with a goal off a pass from fellow senior Melissa Ritchey (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll). Senior Jenna Hiponia (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead on a free position shot and senior Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) pushed the lead to 3-1 with an unassisted goal with 11:12 left in the half.
Dickinson's Katie Iverson halted the Spartan run with a free position goal but York answered with goals from Allison Kolacy (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) and Mulford to take a 5-2 advantage.
The squads traded goals in the final 2:33 of the half as the Spartans took a 6-3 margin to the intermission.
York quickly pushed the lead to 8-3 in the opening 3:40 of the second half as Hudson scored her third goal of the game at the 27:08 mark and junior Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) scored a goal 48 seconds later as the Spartans came out of the break quickly.
Dickinson temporarily halted the York momentum with a Sophie Waine goal at the 23:24 mark but York ripped off five straight goals to take control of the game. The five-goal spurt pushed York's lead to 13-4 with 13:27 left in the game. Hudson scored twice during the run as York tied its highest scoring output of the season.
The Red Devils scored two of the final three goals of the game to provide for the final 14-6 margin.
Hudson had a career day as the senior attack poured in five goals to pace the York offense. Hudson scored her five goals on just seven shots while she also had a ground ball and a draw control. Mulford added three goals and an assist for four points while Kolacy and Ritchey added three points each. Kolacy had a goal and two assists while Ritchey had three helpers in the win. Castle notched a goal and team-highs with four draw controls and four ground balls.
Maddy Siebold and Waine each recorded a pair of points for the Red Devils. Siebold had two goals while Waine had a goal and an assist. Jennifer Morrissey notched four draw controls to lead Dickinson.
The Spartans finished the game with a 34-21 margin in shots and a 19-11 edge in ground balls. York won 11 of the 21 draw controls with the teams were very even in turnovers as York had 14 miscues to 13 for the Red Devils.
York's Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) earned her fifth win of the year as she recorded 11 saves in the victory. JoJo Auerbach suffered the loss as she allowed all 14 Spartan goals in her 60 minutes of play. Auerbach was credited with 11 saves in the game.
Spartan head coach Jen Muston was pleased with the performance of her squad.
"We played really well at both ends of the field today and really supported each other," said the Spartan mentor. "We've been focusing on the fact that each player on the field needs to do their individual part in the game to contribute to a win and the girls did just that today. Everyone played a role in the victory."
The Spartans return to Kinsley Field on Saturday afternoon when they host Wesley College in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time in York is slated for noon.
