Mulford's Big Day Leads Spartans Past Haverford
HAVERFORD, PA – The 11th ranked York College women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 with an 11-9 non-conference win over Haverford College on Saturday in Haverford, PA.
The Spartans fired the opening salvo just 48 seconds into the game as senior Melissa Ritchey (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) found the back of the cage off a pass from Allison Kolacy (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) to give York the early lead. The Fords tied the game just 37 seconds later as Hannah Morgan recorded a free position goal.
Senior Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) put the Green and White back on top with a free position goal of her own at the 24:42 mark. Haverford's Christina Gould tied the game for the second time when she scored an unassisted goal just over 12 minutes later. York got back-to-back goals from Jocelyn Hudson (York, Pa./Central York) and Kerri Nicolich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) to take a 4-2 lead.
Haverford's Diana Perry scored on another free position shot to draw the Fords to within one but Mulford and Hudson responded with goals late in the stanza to give York a 6-3 lead at the half.
Morgan opened the second half scoring with her second goal of the game, cutting Haverford's deficit to 6-4 with 25:19 left in the game. Mulford struck again at the 21:59 mark and teammate Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) notched her first goal of the year as the Spartan lead grew to 8-4.
The Fords would go on a 4-2 run, cutting the York lead to 10-8 with 4:31 remaining in the game. Hudson scored her third goal of the game with 2:53, giving York more breathing room at 11-8. Haverford got the game's final goal from Gould with 1:37 left. The Fords won the ensuing draw but York forced a turnover and ran out the final 34 seconds of the game.
Mulford had a huge day as the senior poured in five goals for a game-high five points. She did her damage on nine shots including 1-for-2 in free position shots. Hudson tallied a career-high three goals while she also captured a game-high seven draw controls. Ritchey was the other Spartan with multiple points as she notched a goal and an assist.
Senior defender Jess Soroka (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake Senior) caused a career-high six turnovers while she also scooped up five ground balls for York.
Gould paced Haverford as she notched three points on two goals and an assist. Morgan, Perry, and Carter each added two goals for the Fords while Elyse Adler contributed a goal and an assist. Sarina Manetta had a team-high four ground balls for the Fords.
Senior Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) registered seven saves in the win as she went the distance in net for York. Haverford's Megan Chenworth made 10 saves in the loss.
York outshot their hosts 30-24 while the Fords edged the Spartans in ground balls, 15-14. The Spartans won 13 draws to nine for Haverford.
The Spartans are scheduled to make their 2014 home debut on Wednesday afternoon when they host Franklin & Marshall in a showdown of nationally ranked squads. First draw is set for 4:00 pm.
