Women's Lacrosse Recognized for Academic Excellence

YORK, PA – The York College women's lacrosse team received a pair of academic honors as announced by the IWLCA (Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association) recently.

The Spartans were one of 86 Division III institutions to receive IWLCA Academic Squad honors for the 2013 season. Each school with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher earned Academic Squad honors. The Spartans were one of the 13 teams to earn the honor and participate in the NCAA Division III Tournament. York was one of three Capital Athletic Conference teams to earn the team honors.

Spartan head coach Jen Muston is proud of her team's academic accomplishment.

"We want student-athletes who excel in the classroom and on the field," said Muston. "The 2013 team did a great job in both realms and I am happy to see them be recognized for their academic performance."

In addition to the team being recognized, a pair of Spartan juniors were selected to the 2013 IWLCA Academic Honor Roll. Attack Melissa Ritchey (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) and defender Kristin Virag (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) were both selected to the honor roll squad. To earn the accolades, a student-athlete must be nominated by their school, have earned at least a 3.5 GPA and be at least a junior academically.

Ritchey finished the season playing in 17 games with two starts during the Green and White's 14-win season.  Ritchey had eight points on three goals and five assists for the year. She is a business administration and marketing major at York.

Virag played in 17 games, earning 11 starts on defense for the Spartans. She notched five ground balls, four draw controls and five caused turnovers for the Spartans. Virag is a nursing major at YCP.

"I am very proud of Melissa and Kristin. Their work ethic in the classroom is a great example for all of our players," says Muston.
