YORK, PA – The York College women's lacrosse squad posted a 22-4 Capital Athletic Conference triumph over visiting Marymount on Friday afternoon in York. The Spartans, whose 22 goals on the day marks a season-high for the Green and White, improve their 2013 record to 8-2 overall including 2-0 in CAC play. The Saints fall to 5-3 on the season and 1-1 against conference opponents.
Senior captain Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md. / Seton Keough) led the York attack with a game-high seven points, notching six goals and one assist. Notably each of the midfielder's goals came during the first 30 minutes of play. Those six tallies gives Schultz 12 goals in the Spartans' last two contests as she also poured in six against Messiah last Tuesday. For the season, Schultz is now tied for second on the squad with 24 goals. The seven points gives Schultz an even 150 points for her illustrious Spartan career. She has 137 goals and 13 assists in 62 career contests.
The Green and White wasted little time as they jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage 67 seconds into the game. Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md. / Seton Keough) produced the opening salvo to put York up 1-0 after a mere 39 seconds. Kim Wayson (Harwood, Md. / Southern) followed that effort just 28 seconds later as she netted the Spartans' second for the early lead.
The story of the half however proved the Green and White's lengthy nine-goal run. Leading 3-2, the Spartans rattled off nine straight tallies, including four from Schultz, between the 22:14 and 7:37 marks of the first frame. Securing a 12-2 advantage with that run, York would go into the break owning a 13-4 lead.
The second half proved all Spartans as the Green and White netted nine more goals and did not allow Marymount to find the back of the net. Six different Spartans tallied during the latter 30 minutes, including freshman Allison Kolacy (Rockaway, N.J. / Morris Knolls) who notched the first goal of her collegiate career.
For the game, York's 22 goals is just one short of their all-time program high of 23 set during the 2008 campaign, a mark which was matched last season. Mulford and Megan Stine (Stevensville, Md. / Annapolis Area Christian) each contributed five points to that Spartan offensive effort. Mulford racked up four goals for the Green and White and added an assist while Stine provided two goals and three helpers. Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md. / Delaware County Christian) produced a pair of tallies while collecting a career-high six draw controls.
Defensively, York caused 14 Marymount turnovers including three by Katie Vautier (Harwood, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) and three from Jocelyn Hudson (York, Pa. / Central York). Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J. / Cinnaminson) captured the win in the Spartan cage as she made a trio of saves over her 43:53 while Tina Nicklas (Catonsville, Md. / Catonsville) contributed a pair of stops over the final 16:07.
Marymount's Chelsea Ritter notched a goal and an assist for her squad while also totaling five ground balls. Molly Maher also collected five ground balls.
With a week off from games, the Spartans head to CAC foe Mary Washington on Saturday, April 6. The conference tilt is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
