GRANTHAM, Pa. – The York College women's lacrosse team fell 17-15 in an offensive dual on the road against #15 Messiah on Tuesday afternoon.
The loss is only the second of the season for the Spartans and snaps a six game win streak. The Green and White are now 7-2 overall and remain 1-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Messiah improve to 3-4 overall.
The Falcons were the first to get on the board. Just a little over a minute into the game, Messiah struck with a free position goal. York wasted little time and Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) took a quick shot at 25:50 to tie up the game. Senior Kim Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) gave the Spartans an early lead 44 seconds later with a strong shot from the far left wing of the circle. The Spartans quickly added to their lead with another goal at 24:40 from Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md./Delaware County Christian).
Messiah answered back with a 6-0 run, to go up 7-3 with 9:04 left in the first half. Both teams continued to battle in the circle throughout the rest of the half. The Spartans managed to add five more goals, but trailed Messiah 10-8 heading into halftime.
The second half was another back and forth battle. The Spartans attacked first with two quick goals from Castle and Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) in the opening three minutes to tie the game back up. Messiah took the lead back at 25:26, but Schultz once again helped to tie the game up with a man-down goal. The Falcons regained the lead, going up with 13-11 with two quick goals at the 20-minute mark.
The Spartans were not ready to back down. Jocelyn Hudson (York, Pa./Central York) cut the Falcons lead to one with a goal at 18:28 and Schultz came up big with another game-tying goal at 17:53. Messiah finished the game final 13 minutes of the game with a 4-2 run to edge out the Spartans by two goals.
Leading the way on offense for the Spartans was Schultz. She finished the game with six goals for six points. Her six goals breaks her previous single-game career goals. Schultz also led the Spartans with seven draw controls. Mulford recorded five points, with two goals and three assists. Wayson chipped in three goals, while Castle added two goals, and Hudson and Kim Nicolich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) each score one.
Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) recorded the loss in the net for the Green and White. Smith finished the game allowing 10 goals and making four saves. Tina Nicklas (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) played 22:01 in the second half. Nicklas allowed six goals and made four saves as well. Also getting time in the net was Kelsey Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston). She recorded three saves and allowed one goal in 7:59.
Pacing the Falcons on offense was Cecilia Kjellman who finished with six points on four goals and two assists. Messiah also had three players finish with three goals each.
Goalkeeper Taylor Phillips recorded the win for the Falcons. Phillips played all 60 minutes, making nine saves and allowing 15 goals.
Messiah led the Spartans in shots, 31-37 and ground balls, 26-21. York held a 19-15 advantage in draw controls, but committed 13 turnovers and the Falcons only had 10.
The Spartans return to action Friday at home for a CAC matchup against Marymount. The game is set to start at 12:00 pm.
