Women's Lacrosse Earns IWLCA Academic Honors; Schultz and Nicklas Also Recognized

YORK, Pa. - The IWLCA has recognized York College women's lacrosse team along with 60 other schools in Division III as earning Academic Squad honors for the 2012 season.

In order to earn this honor, the school must have a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Spartans' earned an overall team GPA of 3.02. The academic award comes on the heels of the Spartans' best season in school history on the field as the Green and White posted 14 victories and made the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance.

On top of receiving the team award, the Spartans also landed two student-athletes on the IWLCA Division III Academic Honor Roll. Rising seniors Tina Nicklas (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) and Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) were recognized for their work in the classroom.

Student-athletes are nominated by their schools and must have achieved at least junior status academically in order to be eligible for this award. 246 student-athletes from 94 different institutions were honored.

Schultz is a three-time All-Capital Athletic Conference midfielder on the Spartan squad. She started all 19 games of the season as she also earned All-Metro region accolades. Schultz scored 34 goals, tallied two assists and had a total of 36 points. She took 83 shots with 61 of them on goal, as well as picking up 33 ground balls and recording a school-record 95 draw controls. In the classroom, Schultz is working on getting her business administration degree. She currently holds a 3.30 cumulative GPA and made the Dean's List in the fall of 2009.

Nicklas is one of three goalkeepers for the Spartans. She is getting her degree in nursing and currently holds a cumulative GPA of 3.52. Nicklas is a four-time Dean's List member. On the field Nicklas appeared in nine games and played a total of 207:24 between the pipes. She faced 61 shots and made 15 saves for the season.

The academic honors are the second for the Spartan squad as they also earned team accolades last year. Head coach Jen Muston welcomes back Shultz and Nicklas as the Green and White will look to continue their success both on the field and in the classroom.
