ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The #11 York College women's lacrosse team closed out their stellar 2012 regular season on Tuesday with a Capital Athletic Conference 12-7 victory over host St. Mary's College of Maryland. The triumph gives the Spartans 13 wins (13-3 overall) on the season, tying their all-time single-season wins record of 13 set last year, including a Green and White record-setting 7-1 mark in CAC play. The Seahawks fall to 8-8 on the year and 4-4 in conference action.
Sophomore attack Erica Mulford led the way offensively for the Spartans as she posted a game-high three goals, tallying each during a first-half spurt. Jenna Hiponia got the Green and White on the board just 44 seconds into the contest as she kick-started a 4-0 York run. The other three tallies in that effort came via Mulford as the sophomore notched each of her three goals within a 3:40 span. She put York up 2-0 with 22:43 remaining in the first before finding the back of the net just 30 seconds later to establish a 3-0 Spartan advantage. With 19:03 to play in the opening frame, Mulford completed her run and gave York the four-goal margin.
In that first half of play, which concluded with York owning a 7-2 lead, the Green and White won an incredible 9-of-10 draw controls. Six different Spartans corralled those nine draws controls, including three from freshman midfielder Sarah Castle.
With York leading 7-2 at the break, the second half proved more back-and-forth as each squad tallied five times over the latter 30 minutes.
The Spartan lead would grow to as much as seven, owning an 11-4 margin with 11:17 left. Goals from Karlie Dougherty and Schultz boosted York's lead from 9-4 to the seven-goal crest at 11-4.
Notably, the Green and White's 13th regular-season victory of the season marks a new program-best for wins during the regular season. York's 13th win during their record-setting 2011 campaign came in the first round of the CAC Tournament.
Mulford's three-goal performance gives the sophomore attack 32 goals on the season as she currently sits second on the squad in that category. Schultz, White, and Kim Wayson each posted two tallies for the Spartans as the Green and White led 29-16 in shots. Wayson currently leads York with 50 goals on the season while Nicolich has posted 30 and Schultz 29.
Allison Green and Katie Vautier each caused a pair of turnovers for the Spartans defensively. Vautier leads the Spartans in that category with 16 on the year. Kelsey Evans picked up the win in the cage as she put together four saves over her 60 minutes, dropping her goals against average to 7.56.
For the Seahawks, Daniella Hanaceck, Cailey Aburn, and Emily Shafer each recorded two goals while Lauriann Parker contributed a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Colleen Simpson takes the loss for St. Mary's as she registered 11 stops.
The Spartans now turn their attention to the CAC Tournament. Courtesy of their outstanding in-conference record, the Green and White enjoy a first-round bye and are slated to return to action on Tuesday, April 24. York is schedule to host the winner of #13 Mary Washington and Marymount at 4:00 pm in next Tuesday's CAC semifinals.
