FREDERICK, Md. - The York College women's lacrosse team opened up their 2012 campaign in fine style on Tuesday afternoon with a 20-2 triumph over Capital Athletic Conference foe Hood in Frederick, Md. With the victory the Spartans begin the year at 1-0 (1-0 CAC) while the Blazers drop to 1-1 (0-1 CAC).
Junior Kim Wayson, York's all-time leader in goals scored, tallied three times on the day while she also notched a pair of assists. Sophomore Jenna Hiponia, who opened the Spartans' 2012 season with a the squad's first goal, also added a trio of scores while distributing one helper.
The Green and White opened the game on a 12-0 run, scoring those 12 tallies over the first 20 minutes of the contest. During that span, seven different Spartans found the back of the net, including Wayson who notched each of her three goals. Hiponia netted two of her tallies here while Melissa Ritchey and Kim Nicolich also added two scores.
That 12-0 advantage extended through the first 25 minutes until Hood's Caitlin Lawrence provided a goal with 4:16 left in the first half. York responded by closing the half with two more goals, courtesy of Leah Schultz and Kerri Nicolich, to post a 14-1 halftime lead.
The second half saw the Green and White extend their advantage to 18-1 by recording four-straight tallies through the first 12:11 of the frame. Schultz, Kerri Nicolich, Hiponia, and Allison Green registered tallies.
For the contest, the Spartans outshot their hosts 29-5, including 21-4 in the first half, while collecting 26 ground balls to Hood's 12. York also won 20 of the 24 draw controls during the 60-minute game.
Spartan netminder Ashley Smith picked up the win in her first start for the Green and White after transfering from FDU-Florham. She played the first 30 minutes and recorded the York's lone save of the game. Kelsey Evans and Tina Nicklas finished out the contest by splitting time in the cage during the second half.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, February 24, as they open up their 2012 home slate. York welcomes Goucher to Kinsley Field for a 4:00 pm non-conference matchup.
