YORK, PA – The Spartan women's basketball team fell in their regular season finale to Mary Washington as the Eagles dominated the boards and lived at the free throw line to down the Spartans 73-56 on Senior Day.

•  Both teams struggled early on as both defenses ruled the way with both teams only managing five points in the first four minutes and change. The Spartans knocked down three deep balls in the opening frame as seniors Debria HendricksKatie McGowan, and Logynn Fuller all knocked one down. 

• The Spartans got in early foul trouble and the Eagles capitalized hitting 16 of their 17 free throws in the first half to take an eleven-point lead into the break as the Spartans trailed 38-27. 

• York came out and closed the gap in the third quarter as Hendricks and McGowan each hit a three-pointer to cut the lead into single digits. The Spartans cut it to six before Mary Washington answered and by the end of the period pushed the lead back out to 14.

• The Spartans were unable to get the lead into single digits the entire fourth quarter and the Eagles continued their scorching shooting from the free throw line as they finished 29-for-35 to cruise to a 73-56 win.

The Spartans are now 26-48 all time against the Eagles … the loss snapped a five-game winning streak at home for the Green and White … the York offense struggled for the second straight contest as they were held to just 31.7% shooting and 25.8% from beyond-the-arc … the Spartans forced 27 turnovers and grabbed 15 steals giving the York defense 14 games this year with double-digit steals … York committed a season high 26 fouls in the loss after just 10 in the previous contest on Thursday at Frostburg State … senior Katie McGowan tallied 23 points for her 11th 20-point game during her senior season … she finished the regular season atop the CAC points leaders with 18.2 points per game … McGowan averaged 21.4 points in conference games this season … fellow senior Debria Hendricks added 12 points giving her nine double-digit scoring performances on the year … Kayla Ferris grabbed 5 more steals in the contest giving her 77 on the season and 3.1 steals per game good for second in the conference … York finishes their regular season 7-6 at home.



The Spartans regular season has now concluded and the Green and White move on to the postseason with the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Spartans will travel to take on the Salisbury Sea Gulls in the first round on Tuesday evening.  Tip off time to be announced later.
