YORK, PA – York College, the reigning Capital Athletic Conference women's basketball champions, has released its 2014-15 schedule. Head coach Betsy Witman will have a dramatically different core of players as the winningest class in Spartan history has graduated. Witman isn't worried as a very talented group of returners teamed with a dynamic freshman class has the Spartan head coach looking towards the upcoming season with an optimistic eye.
The Green and White open the season with their Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament. They welcome Cazenovia, TCNJ, and Ursinus to Wolf Gymnasium on November 15 and 16. The Spartans face Cazenovia in the opening round and then will play in the championship or consolation game on the 16th.
York opens the road campaign three days later with a tough trip to Eastern Mennonite. York returns home to complete a very busy opening week of action as they host Franklin & Marshall on November 22. The Spartans head back on the road on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving as they head to Westminster to face off against traditional rival McDaniel. The busy November slate concludes on Sunday, November 30 when they host Wesley College in the Spartans' Capital Athletic Conference opener.
The Spartans play almost one quarter of their schedule in the opening 15 days of the year.
"We will have a very new team on the floor and we will need to gel quickly to get off to a good start," says Witman.
York has a pair of games in the first week of December as they travel to PSU Harrisburg on December 3 followed by a key home game against long-time conference rival Mary Washington on December 6.
The Spartans are then off for 24 days before traveling to Delaware, Ohio to participate in the Ohio Wesleyan Tournament on December 30 and 31. York faces Franklin (Indiana) in the opening round of the classic tournament followed by a game against national power Hope on New Year's Eve.
The road doesn't get any easier to start the 2015 portion of the schedule as they travel to Newport News, Virginia to face the Christopher Newport Captains in a repeat of the 2014 CAC Championship game. York returns home to host Marymount on January 7 before heading back out on the road to face a loaded Salisbury University squad on January 10 and Frostburg State four days later.
The Spartans have a quick trip back home to host Southern Virginia on January 17 before heading back out on the road with trips to St. Mary's (January 21) and Mary Washington (January 24).
The Spartans begin the home stretch of their final eight games of the year with home games against PSU-Harrisburg on January 28 and Christopher Newport on January 31.
February kicks off with trips to Wesley (Feb. 4) and Marymount (Feb. 7) before they host St. Mary's on February 11. The Spartans' final regular season road trip takes them to Buena Vista, Virginia to face Southern Virginia on Valentine's Day.
The Spartans then close out the regular season with home contests against Frostburg State on February 18 then Senior Day on February 21 against Salisbury.
The conference tournament opens on February 24 with the first round of play. The tournament semifinals are set for February 26 followed by the conference championship game on Saturday, February 28. The winner of the conference tournament earns the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"We have put together another challenging out of conference schedule and it should do a great job of preparing us for a strong conference in 2014-15," says Witman. "This is going to be a much different team but it's a team that is talented and will be exciting to watch. I can't wait to get them on the floor."
