Spartans Selected to Host NCAA First and Second Round Play
YORK, PA – The Capital Athletic Conference champion York College women's basketball squad has been selected to host NCAA Division III Women's Basketball First and Second Round games on Friday, March 7 and Saturday, March 8.
The Spartans will square off against La Roche College in their opening round game. Lebanon Valley and Baldwin Wallace face off in the other first round contest at Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Friday evening.
The Spartans enter the tournament with a mark of 25-2 including a 15-0 mark at home. York is led by CAC Player of the Year Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic), first-team All-CAC forward Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation), second-team All-CAC guard Aja Wallpher (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) and senior captain Kelsey Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel).
The Green and White earned their fourth NCAA Tournament berth under the guidance of CAC Coach of the Year Betsy Witman. The Spartans have advance to the Sweet 16 twice and the appearance is the third in the last four years. York is 4-3 in their previous three NCAA tournament appearances. York posted a 3-1 mark against teams in this year's NCAA Tournament field. York went 2-1 against Christopher Newport including a victory in the CAC Championship game. They also defeated Eastern Mennonite in an early season non-conference game at Wolf Gymnasium. York finished the season ranked second in the Atlantic region.
La Roche comes into the NCAA Tournament with a mark of 23-4 after winning the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament championship. The Redhawks downed Pitt-Bradford 80-67 in the AMCC Tournament semifinals and then captured the title with a 91-55 blowout of Mt. Aloysius.
Casie Cygan leads the Redhawks as she is averaging 18.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Mackenzie O'Donnell is adding 12.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while LaShauna Brothers is adding 11.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. La Roche is averaging 79 points per game while they allow 57.7 points per contest.
Lebanon Valley earned an at-large bid to the tournament after falling to Messiah 53-47 in the Commonwealth Championship game on Saturday. The Flying Dutchmen enter the tournament with a mark of 21-6. Caitlin Bach leads LVC as she is averaging 11.2 points per game. Bach is also leading the Flying Dutchmen in rebounding as the senior forward is pulling in 9.4 caroms per game. Bach is shooting 46.7% from the floor and 73.6% from the stripe. Kiely Chaklos is adding 10.7 points per game. The Flying Dutchmen average 65.1 points per game while they allow 55.5 points per contest.
Baldwin Wallace is making its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance under the guidance of head coach Cheri Harrer. The Yellow Jackets went 20-6 during the campaign as they were co-champions of the Ohio Athletic Conference during the regular season. BW fell to Capital , 83-77, in the OAC semifinals and earned an At-Large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Audrey Smolik leads four Yellow Jackets who average double figures. Smolik is averaging 12.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Jessica Lairson is adding 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Lexi Rohrbach is the Yellow Jackets leading rebounder at 7.3 caroms per game while she is adding 10.6 points per contest. Shari Mangas is contributing 10.8 points per game.
