ATLANTA, GA – The 19th ranked York College women's basketball team remained unbeaten with a 76-42 win over Oglethorpe University in the second round of the Country Inn & Suites Holiday Classic in Atlanta on Monday. The victory enabled the Spartans to capture the classic championship by virtue of their 2-0 record in the tournament.
The Spartans improve to 10-0 as they picked up their third 30-plus point victory of the year. The Stormy Petrels fall to 3-9 overall with the loss. The tournament championship is York's second of the year.
The Green and White got off to a quick start, scoring the first eight points of the game. The Spartan lead grew to 10 at 14-4 but the Stormy Petrels used a 5-0 spurt to draw to within five. The teams would trade baskets over the next few possessions as York's lead bounced between five and seven points. The Spartans hit Oglethorpe with a 10-0 run late in the half, pushing their lead to 30-15 before settling for a 32-19 halftime lead.
The Green and White blew the game open in the opening six minutes of the second half as they outscored their hosts 13-1 to forge a 45-20 lead. The York lead would not fall below 22 points the rest of the game. The Spartan advantage grew to as many as 37 in the late stages of the second half.
Senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) led the Spartans with her second straight double-double as she had 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in a mere 24 minutes of work. Hicks also had two steals and two blocks in the win. Fellow senior Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) added 11 points in 18 minutes of action while sophomore Karli McFatridge (York, Pa./York Catholic) notched 10 points on two threes and four free throws. The Spartans played the entire 16 player rosters with 14 players finding the scoring column. Freshman Dalida Camdzic (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) had a career-high eight points in her nine minutes of play in the second half. Camdzic also had three rebounds in her stint.
Alan Bentley led the Stormy Petrels with 10 points and seven rebounds. Ciara Hughes contributed six points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench for Oglethorpe.
York shot a chilly 38.1% from the floor but a respectable 38.9% (7-of-18) from three. The Spartans were solid from the line, converting 21-of-30 (70%) in the win.
The Spartan defense harassed the Stormy Petrels into 23.3% shooting from the floor and a mere 13.8% (4-for-29) from three.
York outrebounded Oglethorpe 50-37 while they also held a 22-8 margin in points in the paint. The Spartan bench also notched 38 points in the win.
The Spartans are slated to return to action on Saturday when they jump back into conference play with a key contest at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. The Eagles carry a ten-game win streak against York into the game as the Spartans look to remain perfect in conference play. Tip time at Anderson Arena is set for 1:00 pm.
