Balanced Effort Lifts Spartans Over Green Terror
WESTMINSTER, MD – The York College women's basketball squad placed three players in double figures as they rolled past McDaniel College 63-45 in a non-conference contest in Westminster, Maryland on Monday night.
The Spartans improve to 14-4 overall while the Green Terror fall to 7-10.
After a slow start by both teams, the Spartans embarked on a 21-4 run that covered over 12 minutes of game time. That allowed the Spartans to take a 23-6 lead with 7:50 remaining in the opening half. York continued to build on the lead as a Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) triple pushed the lead to 31-11 with 4:38 left in the opening stanza.
After a pair of Green Terror free throws, York's Kelsey Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) drained a three and Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) hit a lay up as the Spartans took a 36-13 lead to the half.
The second half saw the Spartans maintain their lead in the 20's for much of the 20 minutes of action. York managed to push the lead to 30 on another Murphy three with 3:45 left in regulation before the Green Terror ended the game on a 12-0 run, providing for the final 18 point margin of victory for York.
Haley notched her fifth double-double of the year with game-highs in both points, 14, and rebounds, 13. Haley had five blocked shots while she also handed out two assists and had one steal in her 30 minutes of play. Murphy was outstanding shooting the ball as the junior added 13 points on a very efficient 5-of-8 shooting from the floor including a deadly 3-for-4 from three. Murphy also had three assists. Hicks was the third Spartan in double figures with 12 points while she also had six rebounds in 28 minutes of play. Freshman Julianne Lambert (Hockessin, Del./Padua Academy) registered a number of career highs as she established new personal standards in rebounds (3), assists (3), steals (2) and blocked shots (2) while she also contributed eight points which was one short of a career high.
Steph Perez paced McDaniel with 11 points as she was 4-for-11 from the floor including 1-of-8 from three. Rachael Rybak added eight points and four rebounds for the Green Terror.
York shot a season-best 49% from the floor as they converted 24-of-49 from the field. The Spartans also shot the ball well from distance as they canned 8-of-13, good for a season-best 61.5%. McDaniel was limited to 25.8% shooting from the floor, as they became the tenth Spartan opponent this year to be held under 50 points. The Green Terror went just 5-for-26 (19.2%) from three. Neither team was very good from the free throw line as both teams shot 53%.
York held a slight 40-39 edge on the glass while the two squads combined for 40 turnovers in the contest.
York returns home on Thursday evening when they host Washington & Lee in a non-conference contest. Tip time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 7:00 pm.
