Torrid First Half Lifts Spartans Over Saints

ARLINGTON, VA – The York College women's basketball team rode a blistering first half to earn a 63-50 Capital Athletic Conference win at Marymount University on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, VA. The Spartans, winners of four straight, improve to 14-3 overall and 8-1 in the conference. The Saints had their four game win streak snapped as they fall to 7-11 overall and 4-5 in the league.

The Spartans bolted out of the gate in impressive fashion. After the Saints took a 2-0 lead, the Spartans put together a 13-0 run powered by three pointers from Kristen Haley, April Sparkman, and Kelsey Murphy. Murphy hit two more triples in the next four minutes as the lead grew to 21-5 with 12:14 remaining in the first half. The York lead ballooned to 23 on Murphy's fourth and final three of the first half as the Green and White led 32-9. The Spartan lead would get as high as 28 in the first half before the Spartans settled for the 40-14 lead at the break.

The Spartans fashioned one of their most impressive halves of the year. York shot 52% from the floor, 52.8% (7-for-13) from three and 70% (7-for-10) from the line. The Spartans had just seven turnovers while they held the Saints to a paltry 19.4% shooting from the field. The Spartans forced nine Saints turnovers while York outrebounded their hosts 21-19 in the half.

The second half saw the Spartans maintain their lead in the 20's for most of the stanza. The Saints did manage to score 11 of the final 13 points of the game over the final two minutes as the final score appeared to be much closer than it really was. The Spartans did struggle shooting the ball in the second half as they were just 5-for-26 from the floor including 0-for-7 from three. The Spartans were outstanding from the stripe in the second half as they knocked down 13-of-their-14 attempts. The Spartans also failed to care for the ball in the second 20 minutes as they had 15 miscues.

The Spartans were paced by Haley as the sophomore forward had 15 points, a career-high 15 rebounds, and a career-high seven blocked shots. She was 7-for-15 from the floor including 1-for-4 from three. Haley also had two steals in her 30 minutes of work. Haley's double-double is her eighth of the year and 14th of her career. Murphy led the Green and White in the scoring column as the sophomore guard tallied a game-high 16 points. Murphy was 4-for-8 from the floor including 4-for-7 from three while she converted all four of her free throws. Sparkman was the third Spartan in double figures with 12 points while she also had three assists. Sophomore point guard Aja Wallpher contributed a game-high eight assists as she now has 31 assists in her last three games. Wallpher currently leads the nation in assists as she is averaging 6.9 helpers per game.

Katelyn Fischer led the Saints with 14 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals in 40 minutes of play. Fischer was 5-for-12 from the floor including 1-for-4 from thee. Fischer made all three of her free throws in the loss. Carolyn Hildreth was the other Saint in double figures with 11 points. Jackie Bohenek paced Marymount on the boards with 10 caroms.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 35.3% from the floor, 35% from three and 83.3% from the free throw line. Marymount shot just 28.1% from the field, 25% (2-for-8) from three and 59.3% (16-for-27) from three.

The Green and White held a 46-37 edge on the glass while they also held a 13-6 in second-chance places.

The Spartans return to Wolf Gymnasium for a two-game home stand as they host Frostburg State on Wednesday evening. Tip time is set for 6:00 pm.
