FREDERICK, MD – York College sophomore forward Brittany Hicks registered a 15-point, 15-rebound double-double to power the Spartans to a 65-50 Capital Athletic Conference win at Hood College on Wednesday night in the brand new BB&T Arena in Frederick, MD.
The Spartans improve to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the CAC while the Blazers fall to 3-11 overall and 0-7 in the league.
The offenses were very challenged early in the game after York took an early 7-1 lead. The Blazers cut the York lead to one at 10-9 over ten minutes into the half. However, York ripped off a 6-0 run to take a 16-9 lead. York maintained the lead until Heather Boyce canned a three to tie the game at 21 with three minutes remaining in the half. The Spartans outscored the Blazers 9-4 over the final three minutes, keyed by a pair of Kelsey Murphy triples as they took a 30-25 lead to the break.
The second half began much like the first as neither team got in a very good offensive flow. The Blazers' Dyanna Prater hit a jumper at the 15:07 mark, cutting York's lead to just three at 37-34. The Spartans then hit their hosts with a 14-2 run to take a 51-36 lead with 8:54 left. The run was driven by senior April Sparkman as the Spartan guard, making her final appearance in her old stomping grounds, had seven points on the run.
The Blazers made one last gasp, cutting the York lead to 10 at the 7:27 mark but they would not get any closer the rest of the way. York eventually grew the lead to 20 before settling for the 15-point victory.
Hicks finished the game with the career-high 15 rebounds en route to her fifth career double-double. She was 5-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Sparkman paced the Spartans in the scoring column with 18 points as she was 6-for-13 from the floor including 2-for-4 from three and 4-for-6 from the charity stripe. Sparkman also had six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Kristen Haley was the third Spartan in double figures as she added 11 points, all in the second half, while she also pulled down eight rebounds. Sophomore Aja Wallpher had a very solid floor game with five points, six assists, two rebounds, a steal and just one turnover in her 28 minutes of action.
Prater was a one-woman band for the Blazers as the guard tallied a game-high 29 points. She was 9-for-19 from the floor including 2-for-6 from three. Prater was also 9-for-15 from the stripe in addition to having four rebounds and three assists. Unfortunately for Prater, she scored 58% of her teams' points in the loss. Boyce added eight points for the Blazers as their second-leading scorer in the game.
The Spartans dominated the glass in the second half which led them to having a 53-41 advantage in the game. York outrebounded the Blazers 31-18 in the second half including 15-7 on the offensive glass. The Spartans finished the game with a 26-10 margin in points in the paint and a 22-8 advantage in second chance points.
York concluded the game shooting 32.9% from the floor including 5-for-18 (27.8%) from three. The Spartans were highly efficient from the stripe as they went 14-for-17 (82.4%) including a perfect 11-for-11 in the second half.
Hood finished the game converting 28.8% from the floor and 31.3% (5-for-16) from three. The Blazers went 11-for-19 from the stripe in the loss.
York returns home on Saturday afternoon when they host Salisbury in a big Capital Athletic Conference contest. Tip time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 4:00 pm.
