Sloan, Wallpher Boost Spartans to OT Triumph

YORK, Pa. – The York College women's basketball team picked up a grind-it-out 63-58 overtime triumph against visiting Gettysburg Sunday afternoon at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. The non-conference win boosts the Spartans' early-season mark to a solid 4-1 while the Bullets drop to 1-3 on the campaign.

Knotted at 52 after 40 minutes of play, Aja Wallpher opened the OT scoring with a layup 17 seconds into the extra session. After a layup from Cori Younghans to tie the game at 52, Spartan sophomore Kelsey Murphy knocked down a three to give York a 57-54 lead with 3:35 to play. One more Gettysburg tie came at the 2:27 mark (57-57) before the Green and White finished off the contest with solid free throw shooting down the stretch. York went a combined 6-for-8 from the stripe over the final 1:47 to seal the victory.

Sophomore center Madeline Sloan put together a fantastic effort off the bench for the Green and White. Sloan posted career-highs with seven rebounds and an outstanding four blocked shots over her 26 minutes of action. In the first half, she recorded back-to-back blocks and snagged both of those rebounds, while her second block and carom resulted in a Murphy three at the other end. In the second stanza and into the overtime session, Sloan's effort allowed her to stay on the floor for the final 9:48 of the extra session contest. She proved a tremendous presence for the Spartan squad recording two rebounds, two blocks, one steal, and four points over that span. With time ticking down in the overtime session, Sloan recorded a block and the ensuing defensive rebound on a Gettysburg shot and was then fouled sending her to the line for two. She knocked down both clutch free throws with nine seconds left in overtime to give York the final 63-58 result.

Wallpher, a fellow sophomore, posted a career-game as she notched a career-best 17 points on a 5-for-11 effort from the field while adding five freebies. The point guard dished out three assists while adding three steals, including one in outstanding fashion. In a Gettysburg out-of-bounds play on the baseline, Wallpher, who was defending on the ball, stole the attempted inbounds pass on the baseline, catching it out of the air. That steal resulted in another Murphy triple, this one giving the Green and White a 33-31 lead with 16:10 remaining in the second half. That steal and three capped a significant 7-0 run as York grabbed their first lead since holding an 8-7 advantage with 15:06 to play in the opening frame.

From that 16:10 mark, the remainder of the second half proved back-and-forth with six ties and four lead changes. With just 48 seconds remaining in regulation, the Spartans snagged their largest lead of the game with a 52-47 advantage. However, the Bullets' Cori Younghans went on a 5-0 run of her own, knocking down a pair of free throws before hitting a triple with 21 second remaining to knot the score at 52 and eventually send the game into overtime.

Wallpher led all scorers with 17 while Murphy posted 15 points for the Spartans. Brittany Percich, drawing the first start of her career, notched seven points, pulled down four rebounds, and swiped two steals.

Sara Kinlsey paced the Bullets offensively with 16 points on a 5-for-14 effort while knocking down 6-of-7 from the free throw line. She also notched eight rebounds and three steals. Younghans added 12 points for the Gettysburg squad.

The Spartans now turn their attention to Wednesday's tilt at Wesley to kick off their 2011-2012 Capital Athletic Conference slate. York travels to Dover, Del. on November 30 for a 6:00 pm game against the Wolverines.
