DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The York College women's basketball team opened up their winter trip with a 58-31 loss to Denison at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Wednesday. That defeat, the Spartans' second straight, drops the Green and White to 6-5 on the season while the Big Red improve to a flawless 12-0.
Denison's Shaina Kaiser led all scorers with 12 points as she shot 5-for-15 from the floor and added a pair of free throws. She collected four rebounds while distributing two assists and grabbing two steals over her 23 minutes of action.
Teammate Serafina Nuzzo was the only other player in double-digits in the low-scoring tilt. Nuzzo posted ten points while giving out four helpers as she also recorded a pair of steals.
The Green and White had trouble scoring from the outset. York did not reach double-digits until a Brittany Hicks made free throw gave the Spartans ten points with 6:33 to play in the first.
Unfortunately York's offensive woes stretched throughout the period as they would manage only one more bucket over those remaining six and half minutes. Denison however, closed out the half on a 13-2 run as they went into the break leading 33-12.
The talented, yet surprisingly unranked Big Red never looked back.
Denison maintained a comfortable lead over the Spartans throughout the latter 20 minutes. The Big Red owned a 20-plus point advantage during a majority of the stanza and never let their lead drop below 18.
Senior Jaimie Sapp led the Spartans with seven points over her 20 minutes of work as she also pulled down five rebounds. Jess Selby chipped in with five points for the Green and White while fellow rookie Kristen Haley scored four points, pulled down seven caroms, and registered a pair of blocks.
The Spartans will now look to regroup quickly as they return to the court on Thursday, December 30. York, whose originally scheduled game on Tuesday, December 28 against Western Connecticut State was canceled, plays Bethel (Minn.) at 11:00 am in their final game of the Land of Magic Classic.
