Murphy, Wallpher Lead Spartans to Victory in CAC Opener
YORK, Pa. – The York College women's basketball team opened up their Capital Athletic Conference slate in the win column on Wednesday evening as they topped visiting Wesley 61-54 at York's Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. The Spartans improves to 4-2 (1-0 CAC) on the season while the Wolverines drop to 2-4 (0-1 CAC).
Rookies Kelsey Murphy and Aja Wallpher each established career-high point totals to lead the young Spartan squad. Murphy posted a career-best 14 points on a 5-for-11 shooting performance while she also pulled down eight rebounds. Wallpher, the Spartans' talented point guard, notched ten points aided heavily by a solid 8-for-12 showing from the free throw line. She also contributed on the defensive end with four steals and four rebounds.
As a whole, the Spartan defense allowed them to build a 12-point first-half advantage as they held a 35-23 lead at the break. York's work on the defensive end held the Wolverines to a mere 28.6% from floor (8-for-28) while benefiting from 13 Wesley turnovers.
Despite the Green and White's proficient first half, the second period saw the visitors cut deep into the Spartan advantage. Over the stanza's first 9:38, Wesley recorded an 18-8 run to slash York's lead to a mere two at 43-41. Angie Owens, who finished with a game-high 24, tallied eight points for the Wolverines during that span while Cory Boyd notched six.
Senior captain Jaimie Sapp was able to stem the tide however, as the forward canned a free throw and then a jumper to give York a 46-41 lead with 9:31 to play.
Wesley would hang around until the 3:39 mark, having kept the score to within five. At that point the Spartans opened up their advantage, reaching a high of 12 points with 1:55 to play. That 59-47 lead came courtesy of freshman forward Brittany Hicks' traditional three-point play.
Late work from Wesley's Jazmine Miller and Owens brought the lead back down slightly – as well as a few moments of trepidation for the Green and White – but the Spartans effectively finished off the contest and gained the 61-54 CAC triumph.
Aside from Murphy and Wallpher, Sapp added ten points to the Spartan effort. Rookie forward Kristen Haley posted seven points and eight caroms, including four on the offensive end.
For the Wolverines, Owens tallied a double-double with 24 points – on 11-for-14 shooting – and 14 rebounds. She also added five steals and a pair of blocks. Boyd finished with ten points and seven assists as she now sits with 499 helpers on her career. Miller totaled 16 points for the visitors.
The Spartans now turn their attention to this Saturday, December 4, as they prepare for their second conference contest of the season. York travels to Marymount University this weekend for a 2:00 pm tilt with the Saints.
