Spartans Stay Hot with Sweep of Lions, Win Streak Sits at Six

READING, PA   – The York College Spartan softball squad stayed red hot as the Spartans swept the Albright Lions in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday in Reading, PA. The Spartans won game one 1-0 followed by a 13-2 win in six innings in the nightcap. The Spartans have now won six straight as they are now 17-5 overall. The Lions fall to 14-7 with the two losses.

How It Happened

• The Spartans got the game's lone run in the fourth inning. Haley Hirn lashed a single to left field with one out. After a strikeout, Melissa Jurkiewicz singled to left to advance Hirn to third after she had previously moved to second on a wild pitch. Hirn would come around to score on a Miranda Shandy single to short. The Lions would get out of the inning without any further damage.

• Melissa Jurkiewicz would allow one base runner over the final three innings as she threw her third shutout of the year and her second straight.

Game One Notes: The Spartans got one run on six hits with no errors while Albright was shutout on three hits with no errors … the shutout is Melissa Jurkiewicz's third of the year as she has not allowed a run in her last 14 innings of work as she allowed just four hits against SVU and just three hits against Albright … She has struck out nine in her last 14 innings … The Spartans posted their fourth shutout in the last nine games.

How It Happened

• Much like Saturday's doubleheader at Southern Virginia, the Spartan offense exploded in game two. York opened with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Jenny Coyle got the scoring started with a RBI double to center. Katie Maloney then drove in the second run with an RBI single.

• Albright tallied a single run in the bottom of the second on a Morgan Cullen RBI single to left.

• York blew the game open in the third inning as they plated seven runs on just four hits. The Lions had two errors in the inning while York also drew three walks in the frame.

• Albright made it 9-2 with a single run in the bottom of the fourth on a Sammi O'Connor RBI single.

• The Green and White closed out the win with a four run top of the sixth inning. Miranda Shandy launched a three-run homer down the left field line and Ashley Werner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to scored the four runs for York.

Game Two Notes: The Spartans got 13 runs on 13 hits with three errors while Albright had two runs on eight hits with two errors … the double digits in runs was the fourth time this year that the Spartans reached double figures including twice in the last three games … York drew seven walks in the game two win … York has drawn seven or more walks in three games this year … York has won four straight against Albright … York has outscored their opponents 40-4 in their last five games with York twirling three shutouts in that span and only allowing two runs each in the other two games … York is now 8-2 on the road this year … the Spartan pitching staff has only walked 19 opposing hitters in 143.2 innings of work while they have struck out 99 … York has out-homered their opponents 12-2 for the year.

What's Next: The Spartans return to Spartan Stadium for the start of an eight game home stand on Saturday afternoon when they host Christopher Newport. The Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against the nationally ranked Captains is set for a 1:00 pm start on Saturday. The Spartans will then host the University of Mary Washington in a CAC twin bill on Sunday starting at noon.
