Softball Splits a Pair With McDaniel
YORK, Pa. – The York College softball team picked up a 5-4 win and suffered a 6-0 loss in a non-conference doubleheader against McDaniel College on Thursday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
York (14-25) got on the board first in game one as CAC Rookie of the Year Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) led off the game with a double to left field. Maloney was moved to third by a sacrifice bunt by Mackenzie Ewell (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) and later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Jena Ruby (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll).
Mcdaniel (24-12) tied the game up in the top of the second, but the Spartans regained the lead with two runs in the bottom.
Ashley Chenoweth (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) led off the second with a single down the right field line and moved to second by a sacrifice bunt by Natalie Fritz (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg). Chenoweth then scored from second on a single up the middle by Alyssa Molino (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery). Molino then advanced to second on a wild pitch and was driven in by a single up the middle by Maloney.
The Green Terror countered in the top of the third with three runs on four hits to take a 4-3 lead. McDaniel recorded three extra-base hits in the half inning, including a leadoff triple by Rachel Sidney and a two-RBI double by Jaclyn Liebowitz.
A key defensive moment for the Spartans came in the fourth as McDaniel had the bases loaded with no outs. York was able to pick up a crucial out as a McDaniel base runner tried to score on a wild pitch, but was thrown out at the plate. The Spartans were able to get out of the jam without surrendering a run as junior pitcher Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana), who entered the game with the bases loaded, was able to record a strikeout and force a ground out to end the inning.
The fourth-inning defensive stand proved to be a key moment as York was able to take the lead after tallying two runs in the fifth.
York tallied its runs in the fifth when pinch runner Morgan Ober (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) scored from third on a wild pitch and a Chenoweth single drove in Annie Hartman (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) who pinch ran for Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance).
Thacker earned the victory and improved to 3-7 as she threw four innings, allowed zero runs on two hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Stacey Armacost received credit for the loss and falls to 2-2 as she tossed four and one-third innings, giving up five runs on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Game two had a much different tale than game one, as York was held to just three hits and McDaniel had two three-run innings in the fourth and seventh to sum up the scoring for the game.
McDaniel's Caroline Brehm had a stellar performance in the circle as she struck out 13 of the 27 Spartan batters she faced, while forcing six fly outs and one ground out. Brehm improves to 21-8 with the win as she threw a complete game, giving up zero runs, three hits and three walks.
Thacker suffered the loss and falls to 3-8 as she tossed three and one-third innings, giving up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and five walks.
York will return to action on Wednesday, April 28 for its last home doubleheader of the season against Washington College. Game time for game one is slated for 3 p.m.
