Spartan Softball Secures First CAC Wins of Season Over Wesley

DOVER, Del. – The York College softball team snapped a 12-game skid and picked up its first conference wins of the season on Sunday afternoon by scores of 13-1 and 5-3 over Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley at DuPont Softball Field.

The Spartans (10-18, 2-6 CAC) recorded their highest single-game hit total (16) and matched their highest single-game run total (13) of the season in game one.

Freshman Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md./Northern) led all batters with five hits on the day, as she finished 5-for-8 (3-for-3 in game one) with two doubles and one run scored.

York cruised to a victory over Wesley (13-11, 1-7) in game one, winning the game in a mercy-rule shortened six innings after a five-run sixth inning put the Spartan up by 12 runs. Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) contributed greatly to York's offensive outburst in the sixth with a three-RBI triple and scoring a run of her own on the same play after a fielding error by the shortstop.

Maloney had the biggest single-game performance of the day as she finished game one going 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, in addition to career-highs in doubles (2), hits (4) and total bases (8).

Jennifer Taff (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) had a stellar performance in the circle for the Spartans as she picked up the win and improves to 7-11 as she tossed six innings, allowing just one run on four hits with six strikeouts and only one walk.

Lily Engel suffered the loss and falls to 6-4 as she went five innings, giving up eight runs (four earned) on 13 hits with one strikeout.

Game two had a much different story in terms of the frequency and total number of runs scored, but the result ultimately was the same as York held off a seventh-inning surge by Wesley.

Sophomore Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) tied the game for York in the fifth with a solo home run as she now has three homers on the season.

After being held to just one run a piece through six innings, both teams entered the seventh with the determination to score. In the top half of the inning, York had the bases loaded with just one out when Amanda Lewis (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) reached base on a fielder's choice, but no out was recorded on play as the Wolverines committed a costly error to allow two runs to score. Then with two outs and two runners on, Mackenzie Ewell (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) smacked a two-RBI double to bring home Maloney and Lewis to put York ahead 5-1.

Down four funs with the bases loaded and two outs away in the bottom of the seventh, the Wolverines would not go away quietly. A single, combined with a Spartan error scored two runs and cut the York lead to 5-3. Taff, pitching in relief, hit the next batter and loaded the bases for the second time in the inning. The freshman pitcher buckled down and picked up a crucial strikeout on the next batter to secure the victory and York's first conference doubleheader sweep of the season.

Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) earned the victory and improves to 3-6 as she tossed six and one-third innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and tied a career-high with five strikeouts.

Lindsay Siok suffered the loss and falls to 7-5 as she pitched a complete game, allowing five funs (one earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Taff picked up the save, her first of her career, as she pitched two-thirds of the seventh inning, giving up one hit and recorded one strikeout.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday as they host PSU-Harrisburg in a conference doubleheader clash. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
