SALISBURY, MD – The second-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls swept the York College Spartans in a Capital Athletic Conference softball doubleheader in Salisbury, Maryland on Sunday. The Sea Gulls won game one 10-1 in six innings and captured the nightcap 6-4.
Salisbury improves to 23-1 overall and 3-1 in the CAC while the Spartans fall to 8-18 and 0-6 in the conference. All six of York's losses have come to the top three teams in the league standings.
In the opener, Salisbury struck first for a run in the bottom of the opening inning. The Spartans tied the game in the top of the fourth when freshman Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) blasted a solo home run to left. The home run was her second of the season as she continues to have an impressive freshman campaign.
The Sea Gulls recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fourth as catcher Rebecca Hoey launched a solo homer to left as Salisbury took a 2-1 lead.
The Sea Gulls ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with an eight run inning. The uprising was aided by a big Spartan error with two outs that would have ended the inning with the Sea Gulls only getting one run.
Rachel Johnson earned the win for the Gulls as she allowed a run on two hits in her 4.1 innings of work. Johnson registered 10 strikeouts and did not walk a batter. She improves to 14-0 with the win. Kathryn Larson got the final five outs in just five batters as she struck out two to earn her first save of the year.
Freshman Jennifer Taff (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) was tagged with the loss as she allowed ten runs with just two of those being earned thanks to the three Spartan errors in the game. Taff struck out two and walked one in her 5.2 innings of work.
Kim Dorsey led the Gulls as she went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Angelina McDowell was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Angela Malgieri added a hit, an RBI and a run scored.
Maloney led York with her 1-for-3 while Natalie Fritz (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) ha York's other hit with a single in the fourth inning.
In the nightcap, the game was scoreless in the first three and a half innings as the Spartans were hanging close with the second ranked Gulls.
Salisbury got four runs off Spartan starter Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) in the bottom of the fourth on four hits. Two of the hits were infield hits and the other two were doubles for Salisbury.
Salisbury pushed the lead to 5-0 on a Dorsey solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.
The Spartans got their offense on track in the sixth as Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md./Northern) jacked a three-run shot to left, cutting the Spartan deficit to 4-3.
Salisbury got an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double from Rachel Spadin as the Sea Gull lead grew to 6-3. York scored a run in the top of the seventh on a Jena Ruby (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) RBI single to center but the Spartans would strand two runners as they dropped their 12th straight game.
Larson earned the win for Salisbury as she tossed a complete game, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits. She struck out seven and walked four as she improved to 9-1.
Thacker suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on seven hits in four innings of work. She struck out one and walked another as she falls to 1-6. Taff tossed the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout.
Dorsey and Molly Gigioli each went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Katie Sebbane was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Virginia Walther was 1-for-1 with two RBI in a pinch hitting appearance.
Ruleman was 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored on her fourth home run of the year. Ruby was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Fritz was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
York returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Wesley College to face the Wolverines in a CAC doubleheader. First pitch in Dover is set for 12:00 pm.
