Spartans Surrender Two Games To Visiting Blue Jays
YORK, Pa. – The York College team softball dropped two games to non-conference neighbor Elizabethtown College by scores of 9-7 and 3-1 at Spartan Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The Spartans (8-10) nearly pulled off a final-inning comeback with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh in game one, while the Blue Jays (8-10) needed a seventh-inning rally in game two to complete the two-game sweep after being no-hit through six innings.
Game one started with both teams finding an offensive groove as each team mirrored one another with three runs in the first and one run in the second. Sophomore Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) highlighted York's early offensive production with a three-run blast to left center in the first inning.
After Elizabethtown busted out four runs in the fourth inning, the Blue Jays maintained their lead the rest of the way.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans mounted one last attempt at a comeback as Courtney Carbone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had an RBI single to left field that scored Morgan Ober (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal). Alyssa Molino (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery) was the next runner to score as she trotted home from third on a wild pitch. After scoring the two runs, York still had two runners in scoring position, but a ground ball to second base ended the hopes of a completed comeback.
Hill paced the Spartans as she 4-for-4, including a home run, with three RBI and one run scored.
Elizabethtown's Keli Krause earned the victory and improved 4-4 as she tossed a complete game, allowing seven runs on 13 hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Jennifer Taff (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) was credited with the loss and fell to 6-6 as she went five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
In the nightcap, neither team recorded a single hit through three and one half innings of play. York ended that stretch with three hits in the fourth, none bigger than a lead off home run by freshman Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) that put the Green and White up 1-0.
York maintained its narrow lead into the seventh inning, riding the arm of Taff who had surrendered zero hits and allowed only two base runners through six innings. The Blue Jays wasted no time in the final inning as they broke up the no-hitter with a lead off single and went on to tally three runs and five total hits to take a 3-1 lead.
The Spartans were unable to counter the sudden outburst of offense from their opponents as they turned in three straight outs in the final half inning of play.
Laura Tomasetti of Elizabethtown received credit for the win and improves to 2-4 as she threw a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits with zero strikeouts and zero walks.
Taff suffered the loss and she falls to 6-7 as she went the distance for the Spartans, allowing three runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk.
York will return to action on Sunday in a conference doubleheader against Mary Washington. First pitch at Spartan Stadium is slated for noon.
