Late Inning Rally In Game Two Not Enough As Spartans Suffer Sweep To Bullets

YORK, Pa. – The York College softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep to Gettysburg College by scores of 9-1 and 11-9 on Monday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

After struggling to put runs on the board in game one, York (8-8) found new life in game two and used a four-run sixth inning to tie the game up 9-9 heading into the final frame. The Bullets (10-4) notched two runs in the top of the seventh and the Spartans had a chance in the bottom half to tie with two runners in scoring position, but failed to get either run across before the final out was made.

In game one of the two-game set, York scored its only run in the fourth when freshman Annie Hartman (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) scored on an RBI-single to left field by freshman Courtney Carbone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford). York had a chance to put runs on the board prior to Carbone's single, but Lauren Lum (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Trabuco Hills) lined out to the first baseman, who then doubled-up Alyssa Molino (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery) on the play.

Freshman Mackenzie Ewell (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) paced the Spartans in game one as she went 2-for-3 with no RBI and no runs scored. Morgan Heinbach led the Bullets with a game-high three hits as she went 3-for-3 with no RBI and one run scored.

Gettysburg's Lindsey Treanor picked up the win and improved to 4-2 as she tossed five innings while allowing one run on seven hits with three walks and no strikeouts.

Jennifer Taff (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) suffered the loss as her record fell to 6-4 as she went five innings while allowing nine runs on 13 hits with one walk and one strikeout.

The Spartans approached game two with a new mindset and it was evident as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead within the first two innings. Vanessa Mendez (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md./Northern), and Jena Ruby (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) each recorded hits in a four-hit, four-run second inning.

The Green and White suddenly saw its five-run lead wiped away as Gettysburg went up 8-5 with eight runs on four hits, combined with five Spartan errors in the third and fourth innings.

The Bullets added one more run in the sixth, but York tied up the game with an offensive outburst in the bottom half of the inning.  Two walks set up a two-RBI double to right center for sophomore Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance), but the Spartans were not done. The next batter up was Ruby who homered to left field, knocking in Hartman who pinch ran for Hill.

Gettysburg answered right back in the top of the seventh with two runs to take the 11-9 lead. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, York had Maloney on second and Carbone on third with Ewell at the plate. Ewell hit a fly ball down the right field line that was caught in foul territory by the right fielder who then threw home to get Carbone attempting to score from third.

Treanor secured the victory, her second of the day, in a relief effort as she improves  5-2 as she went five and two-thirds innings while allowing four runs on seven hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Taff suffered the loss while also pitching in relief as she falls to 6-5 as she went three and two-thirds innings while giving up four runs on seven hits.

The Spartans will return to action on Wednesday in a home doubleheader against neighboring Elizabethtown College. First pitch for game one is slated for 3 p.m.
