Spartans Sweep Southern Virginia as Win Streak Reaches Four
BUENA VISTA, VA – The York College softball squad picked up a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, Virginia. The Spartans won game one 9-1 in five innings and completed the sweep with an 11-1 win in the nightcap.
York is now 8-6 overall as they have won four straight. Southern Virginia falls to 0-8 with the two losses.
York jumped on top in the opener as they tallied a trio of runs in the top of the first. Natalie Fritz (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) plated the first run with an RBI double to left center. Fritz then rode home when Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) blasted a two-run homer to give York the 3-0 lead.
York added another three runs in the top of the third and then closed out the scoring with three more runs in the top of the fifth.
The Knights got a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth to prevent the shutout.
York had just five hits in the game but drew nine walks off Southern Virginia pitching. Hill had a big game one with two hits, three RBI and two runs scored in her two at-bats. Her home run was her first of the year. Fritz added a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
McKenzie Packard led the Knights with two singles in the loss.
Freshman Jennifer Taff (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) picked up the win as she tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five.
Jamie Pinkston started and suffered the loss for the Knights as she allowed six runs on five hits with five walks in her three innings of work. She falls to 0-2. Kelsey Bair relieved Pinkston and did not allow a hit in her two innings. Unfortunately for Southern Virginia, Bair walked four and hit two others as she allowed three runs.
In the nightcap, York got off to another quick start with two runs in the top of the first. The Spartans then exploded for five runs in the top of the second as they blew the game open early.
The Knights got Packard home run in the bottom of the fourth to get on the board but York closed it out with a four spot in the top of the fifth, providing for the final 11-1 game two margin of victory.
Hill had another big game as the sophomore went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) added a hit, two runs scored and and RBI while Fritz was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Lauren Lum (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Trabuco Hills) chipped in with two RBI and a run scored for York.
The Spartans finished with 11 runs on seven hits while they drew five more walks in the win.
Packard not only spoiled a shutout but also the perfect game. She was the only Knight to reach base as Taff was nearly perfect for York.
Taff improved to 6-3 with her second win of the day as she allowed the one run on one hit as she struck out three. She did not walk a batter in her nine innings of work for the day.
Cassandra Pacheco suffered the loss as she allowed seven runs, six earned, on five hits with two walks in 1.2 innings of work. She falls to 0-4 for the year. Pinkston tossed the final 3.1 innings for SVU as she allowed four runs, three earned, on two hits and three walks.
The Spartans return to action on Monday afternoon when they host Gettysburg College in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch in York is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
