Spartans Fall In Both Contests at Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC. – On the final day of the Spartan's five day spring break road trip, York dropped both contests.  The Spartans fell to Malone in the first game 17-13, then fell to Lycoming in the second game 4-3.

In the first game of the day, Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J. / Indian Hills) took the mound for Spartans.  Malone charged out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first behind a Holstrager homerun.  The Spartans were unfazed and put two runners on with a Ashley Chenoweth (Fredericksburg, Va. / Stafford) single and a Ashley Chenoweth (Fredericksburg, Va. / Stafford) walk.  Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md. / Northern) stepped up to the plate for the Spartans.  Ruleman took the ball to the fence for a homerun to knock in three runs and gave York a 3-2 lead.

Malone tacked on three runs in the top of the second, forcing York to respond in the bottom of the second.  Alyssa Molino (Montgomery, Pa. / Montgomery) started the Spartan attack with a double, and was able to score with Mackenzie Ewell (Hamilton, N.J. / Steinert) off wild pitches. The Spartans were able to work their bats to force errors and wild pitches to total seven runs in the game.  This was the second time in as many days that the Spartans had an inning with seven runs.  After the second inning the Spartans had a 10-5 advantage.

The Pioneers were able to tack on a run in the third, while limiting the Spartan offense to a Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md. / Urbana) single. In the top of the fourth Malone put together a six run inning, which gave the Pioneers the 12-10 lead.

The Spartans responded in the top of the fifth with a Thacker double to send Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa. / Sun Valley) home.  Thacker then scored off a wild pitch to even the score at 12.  Malone tacked on a run in the sixth and then was able to put together a three run seventh inning.  The Spartans worked to cut the deficit in the bottom of the seventh, but fell just short.  Lauren Lum (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) was able to get the RBI by sending Ruleman home.

The 13 runs that the Spartans scored was their highest offensive output of the year.  Levine went for the full seven innings allowing 12 runs, while Coyle earned the win for the Pioneers by allowing 13 runs.  To go with Ruleman's homerun, Molino had two doubles and Thacker tacked on her own double.

In the second game of the day, Jennifer Taff (Germantown, Md. / Clarksburg) took the mound for the Spartans.  In the top of the second, Lycoming struck first with a Weaver double.  Lycoming was able to add another run in the top of the fourth.  The Spartans were held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth.  The inning was started with a Thacker walk and a Ruleman single to left field.  Natalie Fritz (Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg) sent the ball flying through the field to send Thacker home. Lum then was able to get an RBI by sending Ruleman home with a ground out to second.  Ewell ended the scoring for York with a single to right to send Fritz home.  York ended their three run inning with a 3-2 lead.

Lycoming came back in the top of the sixth with two runs to take the 4-3 win.  Lycoming scored two runners off an error to right field.  The game ended with only one more hit for York.

Taff had the loss for the day with three strikeouts and only allowing six hits.  Kristi Weaver had the win for Lycoming.  York had one extra base hit with Natalie Fritz. The Spartans return to action on March 13, at Susquehanna University for a double header.
