NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The York College softball team split a double header with the University of Mount Union on Monday in pleasantly warm North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as the Spartans started the southern swing of their 2014 spring trip.
The Purple Raiders earned a 3-1 win in the opener while the Spartans bounced back to capture a 5-1 win in the nightcap. York is now 3-3 overall while the twin bill opened the season for Mount Union.
In the opener, York got on the board first in the top of the second as centerfielder Mackenzie Ewell (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) singled in Natalie Fritz (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) to put York up 1-0.
The Purple Raiders got on track in the fourth as they strung together three extra base hits to push across three runs . The Spartans had an error in the inning as two of the three runs were unearned.
The Spartans wouldn't be able to muster any offense in the late innings as they had just two base runners over the final five innings of play.
Michelle Stiltner earned the complete game win as she allowed one run on two hits with five strikeouts, no walks and one hit batter. The win is her first of the year.
Freshman Jennifer Taff (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) was tagged with the hard luck loss as she allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Fritz and Ewell had the Spartans' lone base hits in the game.
Mount Union received four hits from four different players. Olivia Schumacher had a triple while Brittany Helmink and Megan Okuda each had doubles in the win.
In game two, the Purple Raiders opened the scoring in the top of the third with a single run in the frame.
York responded with a four spot in the bottom of the third. Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) stroked a two-run double to plate the first two runs. Fritz then scored Thacker with a sacrifice fly and then Lauren Lum (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Tabuco Hills) drove home Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md./Northern) with a two out single.
York added an insurance run in the fourth, pushing their lead to 5-1.
That would be more than enough for Taff as she picked up her first collegiate win with a complete game. She allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk as she leveled her record at 1-1.
Erin Simmons suffered the loss as she went six innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk. . She is now 0-1 with the setback.
Three Spartans banged out two hits in the win. Thacker was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Ashley Chenoweth (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Lum added two hits and an RBI. Fritz added an RBI for York.
Kailey DeMarco led the Purple Raiders with two hits.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday morning when they face Ferrum at 9:30 am followed by a contest against Gwynedd Mercy at 11:30.
