Spartans Drop Sunday Afternoon Twinbill

LYNCHBURG, VA – The York College softball team dropped a twin bill at Randolph College on Sunday afternoon in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Wildcats captured game one 8-0 in five innings and completed the sweep with a tight 4-3 win in the nightcap.

The Spartans are now 2-2 for the year while the Wildcats improve to 2-4.

In the opener, the Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the second off Spartan starter Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md. / Urbana) as the hosts plated a run on a Jackie Lamberty RBI ground out.

Randolph tacked on a run in the bottom of the third on an Ashton Ewers RBI double. The Wildcats then pushed the lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth. Randolph ended the game with a four-run fifth inning to capture the 8-0 win in the opener.

Logan Carter earned the win as she threw five shutout innings, scattering two hits with two strikeouts and a walk. She improves to 1-2 with the win.

Thacker takes the loss as she allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks in her three innings of work. Freshman Jennifer Taft (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) surrendered six runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout in her 1.2 innings of action.

Hunter Glave had a big day at the plate for Randolph as she was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Rachel Hickman went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Brittney Via also had a pair of hits and an RBI. Randolph banged out 12 hits in the win including three extra base hits.

Lauren Lum (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) and Alyssa Molino (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery) each had hits for the Spartans as they were limited to just four base runners in the game.

The nightcap started off much better for the Spartans as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md./Northern) jacked a solo shot to left to lead off the frame.

York tacked on a second run in the third thanks to a pair of Wildcat errors as the lead grew to 2-0.

The Wildcats responded in a big way as they plated four runs in the bottom of the third with a great deal of help from the Spartans. York pitchers walked five in the inning as Randolph had just two hits in the frame. The Spartans also had three passed balls and a wild pitch in the inning.

York cut their deficit by one in the top of the fourth. Freshman Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) double to the gap in left center as Kayleen Bell (Herndon, Va./Westfield) scored for York, cutting the Wildcat lead to 4-3.

York would get one base runner in the sixth and one in the seventh but couldn't push home the equalizer as the Spartans fell by one run.

Carter picked up the win in the circle for the Wildcats as she pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief as she struck out three and allowed one hit to improve to 2-2. Thacker was tagged with the loss as she allowed two runs on three walks in a third of an inning of work. She falls to 1-3 with the setback.

The Spartans allowed just three hits in the game. Randolph's Glave went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored while Hannah Winfree went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Molino led the Spartans with two hits including her second double of the year. Maloney added her first collegiate double and an RBI.

The Spartans continue their spring trip on Monday when they face Mount Union in a doubleheader in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Game one is slated for a 9:30 am start.
